i have worked in the electrical trade for years,i have had amp gauges melt and burn, if you want an amp gauge use one with a shunt,that way your not having that current travel through your fire wall.your best bet is a volt gauge,i find the volt gauge lets you kn
ow what your charging system is doing.and is less likely to cause a fire. good luck.

I agree with 86 Big Red.

Think of it this way, 60 amp altenator, can potentially send 60 amps going through the firewall through the gauge, to the battery.

Then people wonder why they melt and burn.

Using a ammeter shunt, the 60 amps travel directly to the battery from the altenator, and only a slight amount goes to operate the gauge.

My advise... ALWAYS use a ammeter shunt when installing an ammeter.
