I just got back from the Ford dealership. I took my 2005 F-150 there after the check engine light came on and the truck began to run a little rough.
Last week they told me it was the timing sensors. This week they tell me it's the cam phasers. Today they are telling me that it's all because of "sludge" buil-up and they are not sure if the extended warranty will cover the cost. They are telling me I need a new motor from a junkyard.
I have changed the oil numerous times and always used the best grade possible. This is still a fairly new truck with 42,000 miles. Does this sound right to the rest of you?
Try going to a different dealer and tell them about the alledged sludge issue and if they look into it like they probably will, ask to see it. What kind of driving does your truck see? Lots of idleing and short trips need more oil changes. There could be another problem that may be causing it, if there is a problem at all.
I appreciate all the replies. I'm a little out of my element with automotive issues. I'm a firefighter/paramedic and pretty good at fixing people but not so good when it comes to vehicles.
I drove out to the dealership and found that my extended warranty company (Intercontinental) authorized them to take the engine apart and transport the "heads" to a location where they can be inspected in order to find out why the oil pressure dropped. I have not seen the equipment.
I called my fire rescue fleet guy and he is going to examine the parts on Monday. In the mean time I've contacted an attorney in case this gets ugly.
I'm dissapointed. This is my second Ford. I bought a 1999 Ford Crown Vic, LX Sport model. I loved that car and it never gave me a bit of trouble. I traded it in for the Ford F-150 Super Crew Lariat that I drove until last Monday when the "ticking" sound started and my strange journey into auto repair started.
Even after all this, I'm still thinking of buying the 09' F-150 after looking at them the other night.
Thanks again for the responses and I'll continue to post as this process progresses.
Don't let this one bad apple scare you from F150's, most people get many trouble free miles from them, does suck when it happens to you though. And yes, the 09's are nice!
It sounds like you're dealing with morons, cam phasers are a known issue on the 3Vs. And I have a hard time believing a mod motor "sludged up" at 42,000 miles with decent maintenance. These engines are just damn hard to sludge up.
I don't know anything about timing sensors, cam phasers, flux capacitators... but it sounds to me like they're trying to take you, and your warranty company to the bank!
Welcome to FTE. It definitely sounds like you have some questionable mechanics on the job. Do not be afraid to ask for the information on your regional Ford rep.
im not a mech. but the last two oil changes I have done I have observed a white colored sludge under my oil cap and on the inside of the oil fill tube. I use mobile 1 5/20 full syn and change the oil every 4 to 5 thousand miles any thoughts or advice on this. I live in maine and use my truck as a daily driver.

Don't worry about that. It is caused by condensation. My truck does this every winter. I drive every day to work but it is only about a 10-15 minute drive and the motor doesn't get warm enough for the condensation to dissipate.

I am guessing you do lots of short trips.
The first time you do a long trip on the HWY, say to another town 100 miles away, whenyou get there check the cap again.
It will likely be clean, as the heat cooked the moisture off.
My truck will get several short trips in a row, but then about once a week gets a good long run to heat it well for a while.
