it ain't no harder than rebuilding a 4 speed. just measure backlash, don't do it half-***, if you have to pull it out 2 or 3 times to get it right, it will still be worth knowing you did it right. torque everything to spec. clean it up good, repair whats broke and put everything back the same way it came out, unless it all just falls out, and buy some good lube. i've done 2 rear ends, a np435, a ford 3.03, and old fulltime dodge np203 TC. They worked better after than before, i'll chalk that up as good.
Rebuilding a D60 is not too difficult, but it can be time consuming. And it does take a few special tools. You need a bearing puller, dial indicator with a fixed stand, some assorted drivers to install the bearings and the races. You also need access to a press. And access to air tools, specifically a 1/2" Impact and a assortment of sockets will help. And a shop manual is a must.
The job can be somewhat tedious as it may take several installs to get the pattern right. If it is just the bearings and the ring and pinion & carrier is good, it may go right back together with the shims it had. Other times, I have fought for 8 hours to get a decent pattern, only to go back with my original because it was the best I could get. With a front end, you can get away with a so-so pattern because you are normally not running at high speeds for long periods.
I'm not sure what the shop quoted you. Depending on the labor rate, figure $300-400. Around $200-250 for a ring and pinion, and about $200 for a complete bearing kit with shms. Worse case with extras, no more than a $1000.
300 dollars for the drive shaft U joint replace, I would feel like Jesse James if I asked for 100 dollars with parts included.
Agree with that. Labor rate must be outrageous. I'm not sure what the book pays, but I'd imagine about 2 hours actual.
The CV rebuild kit for that driveline is about $100 itself. Maybe $30 for the front U-joint. An hour labor to R&R and overhaul. I can't imagine any more than $250, worst case.
