I just picked up a 9' rear end today for cheap, it looks to be in great shape. The guy i bought it from said its a 31 spline diff and its from a 77 pickup, i was hoping someone could help me identify it. I found some #s on the third member they are C7AW and next to them are 78, also does anyone know the stock length of a 1977 truck 9' housing that would help me alot. thanks
Do you mean the width of the housing, from outside the flange a the end of the tube?
I don't know these specs, but have seen them posted here by others. I tried a search, but don't have all day and couldn't find it easy. Search via google or stand by for more.
As far as the carrier you got, the only way to really ID it is from a thin metal tag that was attached to it at birth. If that's gone, who knows where it came from.
BEFORE you install, I would recommend having it gone through and at least have new bearings installed. jmo.
Like I said, you may get a hit on the axle dimensions. Good luck.
Is there anything else following C7AW like this: C7AW-4107-H?
From the master cross reference catalogs (85e150: got 'em from Pasadena Ford-they never threw anything away! ), I can ID some of these numbers.
The C7AW carriers (there's more than one) were used on cars/truck from 1967 thru 1986, but the carrier has nothing to do with axle shaft splines.
If the Ford ID tag, which was bolted to the carrier at roughly 5 o'clock is missing, the only to discover what splines the shafts are, is to pull an axle.
1973/79 F100/150's came with either 28 or 31 splined axles.
The parts catalog lists the axle specs, but not the housing specs.
Thanks for the info, im not so worried about the diff, axles or intenals for im replacing them all with strange eng. components, im just worried about my housing being the correct length for my 77 f-150
