My neighbor has a 93 Explorer XLT w/4.0 OHV. He is a pretty competent mechanic, but this has got both of us stumped. Recently the engine started running real bad when you gave it any gas, and it had no power. We unplugged the MAF, and the engine then ran great, but of course the check engine light came on. Sounds simple right? We tried 3 other MAFs that were known to be working, and it did the same thing. When you give it gas, it sputtters like its running to rich, and has no power at all.
The other odd part is that it seems to work fine with the MAF plugged in until the needle on the temp guage just gets into the normal range.
We are thinking about swapping the computer with another explorer he has
Have you by chance checked for vacuum leaks? I had a similar issue with mine recently (affected normal shifting behaviour too) and it turned out to be a $1.00 part that had broken and the lack of vacuum caused the vehicle to behave in such a way that I'd want to get rid of it.
check on the right hand side of the motor, down by the EGR tube, there is a little rubber vacuum line that runs to ERG sensor, with 2 or 3 other lines going out to the ERG sonoid, check all of those, mine rotted out and it ran good untill you hit the gas the it would splutter and die out, replaced that line and it was fine afther that.
