Anyone with Procomp tires want to share thier opinions on them. I've been considering a set for my Bronco. My local 4X4 shop says they are garbage and he won't recommend them to anyone.

I don't have a set but from what I've read and from experiance someone I know has w/ them I'd say thier mediocre at best. Petersons did a mud tire test a couple months back and the Pro-Comps pretty much sucked. If you're looking for a cheap mud tire I'd go w/ a General Grabber MT. Their probably pretty comprable to the Pro Comps and they cost less. If you want some REALLY chap mud tires go to www.tires2you.com and check out the Mud Kings. 35x12.50's run $117 ea and the have free shipping.
LAST EDITED ON 03-Jul-01 AT 12:33 PM (EST)[p]If you're mostly going to be running in mud, then go for the General Grabber M/T's. I have a set on my 2wd, and they've gotten me through places that 4x4's with those "cheapy mud terrains" got stuck. The ProComps are very similar, but as a slightly higher cost. And in defense of the ProComp's, sure they're going to finish poorly when compared to Boggers and Swampers. IMO you can't fairly compair radial multi-purpose MT tires to bias-plied special purpose tires....sure the special purpose ones will kill the radials in the mud, but they won't handle for sheot on the road.
Here's another article where they were tested in OffRoad Magazine. http://www.gr8ride.com/cgi-bin/pm/common/prodReview.jsp?channel=Truckin&community=Off-Road&oid=65147

They were also compared to the BFG MT and the yokohama Geolander MT. which are more in their class. The BFG's whomped all over the procomps and only run $10-$15 more. I don't expect them to compare to swampers that's not even reasonable, but I do expect a mud tire to work well in the mud. The procomps didn't clean well, float well or bite well which is what a mud tire needs to do. I personally wouldn't get them. I have heard alot of good things about the General grabbers though.
Thanks for the input. The main reason I asked about ProComp's is 4wheel Parts Wholesalers had a deal that was hard to beat 4 35X12.50 ProComp MT's on 15 x 10 Aluminuim Wheels for $899.But now I just need tires because I picked up a real nice set of 15"x10" American Racing wheels off of EBay

What alot of people don't realize is that the BFG is one of the few radials with a three-ply sidewall. You'll wish you had it the first time a pro-crap or similar gets torn open on trail. I've run several tires and if you want a dual purpose the bfg mudder is the ONLY way to go.

I have some 35x12.50x16 pro comp mud terrains and I love them. I previously had swampers on my truck but I hated them and got rid of them. I agree the swampers would do better in the mud than the procomps, but they are horrible on pavement.
The procomps are very similar to a BFG. I think they are just as good and cost less than than the BFG since you are not paying for the name. I use my truck off road more than the average person, not so much in mud, but in rough rocky terrain, where there are lots of sharp rocks and stumps and the procomps are holding up well. If I was going to buy a new set of tires tomorrow I would get the procomps again.
I just got my new issue of Off-Road Magazine today, and there's a ProComp ad in it that shows a new tread design. The ad doesn't really say much about it, but it's pictured and they have a new X-Terrain banner down the side of the page. Looks like they're making yet another tire.
As for the 2 vs. 3-ply sidewall issue with the ProComps, if you read the article I posted above you'll note that the ProComps 2-plys are made with thicker, heavier ply's that are actually stronger than most 3-ply sidewalls, yet still allow the better sidewall flex if a 2-ply.

Everybody has the preferences, and thats cool, but recently two different mags have run mud tire tests...in both cases the bfg's spanked the pro-comps in the mud. They may look the same but its the performance that counts. I'm not saying the 'comps are bad tires, but there is a reason that the bfg is the mudder that all others are compared to when talking about dual purporse rubber (yea, I don't consider swampers dual purpose either cuz there pigs on-road).

I agree with you bdog1234. I have a set of 33x12.5x16.5 procomp MT's and I love them. I have been a very faithful buyer of BF Goodrich MT's but they wear quickly. I have had 5 sets of them now and they were all great on road and off. My procomps are a harder compound so they should last a little longer if I keep off the gas! I have had just as good of performance off road as the BF's and a little better than my BF's on road. The sides are thicker than the 3 plys and seem to be an overall great tire. I plan on switching to a set of Super Swamper SSR's next year because my 33's are too small. I have a 2000 F150 ext cab so I plan on going with a set of 35x14.5 for my next set. I hope you guys at least give the procomps a chance. Everyone has their preferences, but they are good tires. Hope this helps you guys.
I've had the BFG MT's, Dunlop Rovers an the General Grabbers on my truck (yes this same truck). All of them being 33 X 12.5's the ProComps are what I have on it now and they have held up the best of all of them. I do majority of the time on the road and minor amounts of mud. The BFG's wore out way too fast, could never keep the Rovers balanced, and the Grabbers just plain SUCKED! The Pro Comp's have held up the longest, wore and rode well, and gave me awsome amounts of traction off road. When these tires finally wear out, I will be going to 36 either Swampers or Hawgs. Just my 2 cents...

slightly worked 351, E4OD, Pro Comp MT 33's
350 hp at the rear wheel (I said slightly worked!!)
Just thought I'd share some info I found out. Pro Comp tires are made by Cooper tire. I ended up buying ##### Cepek M-C II Radials (Also made by Cooper Tire) because I got a real good deal on them
$125 each for 35X12.50's and they are supposed to be the same tire as the Pro Comp MT as far as rubber compound/construction with only slight tread differences. So far they have been great.
