the 2009 escape looks the same as the 2008 model. they changed the body style in 2008.all the safety upgrades were add in 2008,side air bag curtains, children can be sat up front and the bag knows if they should deploy or not depending on the weight of the person in the seat.the computer can tell if your not wearing a seatbelt, and deploy the airbags up higher so your not thrown out the front windsheild, etc.i feel safe knowing my family is driving around in it. i have pics of ours (Heather's) in my gallery. they are real impressive little rigs for the money. i know they are great in a foot of snow, even with only front wheel drive ,with traction control, and roll control, they are really stable. iknow three seperate families that bought one escape and then went back to buy a second one for another family member,so thats what started us looking at them.i think when they restyled the body for 2008,they came out looking sort of like a tiny baby excursion ,every time i get a chance i park by an excursion so it looks like the ex had a baby ! one day i will get a good picture of that.-lol

I wouldn't hit a dog in the butt with a japanese suv, or any other of thier cars for that matter. My 08 mariner has come a long way since my 01 escape with safty features, comfort and capability and my 01 escape was awesome. My 08 mariner is 10 times better, so that should tell you how good it is if the escape was awesome. I guess the mariner would be super awesome ha ha!! They can rival anything out of japan in the same price range.
