I'm going to be building a sub box with 3/4" MDF for my 2 Kicker S8L7 behind the seat in my crew cab. Right now the dimensions for this box are 50" long x 17" high x 9" b.d and 3" t.d. all outside measurements (approx. 1.94 cu.ft.) Do you guys think this will work? The only dimension that could possibly be to big is the 9" bottom depth, maybe 8" would work better. If you guys have any expertiece in enclosure design please feel free to input some data. I also would like to add a port. What size of port should be used, I've heard approx. 18 sq.inches, would that be right? Thanks for the help.
My boxes are 7.5 bottom 17 tall and 3.5" tall. It's a tight fit now that I have foam under the carpet, I had to put the box in before I bolted the seats down. That's going to put you 8" just as tight.
I didn't do the box building week, but I did pay attention to the review. Port size really depends on the Frequency you want to reinforce. For SPL, you measure the length of the cab and this length is used to find a frequency that will complete a full, 1/2 or 1/4 wave and stay in phase as it's reflected. From there, there is a lot of math or a program to find the port size and depth that attenuates all other frequencies.
If you just want flat response bass and a small box, forget the port. A sealed box doesn't reinforce any particular frequencies and gives off a more level set of frequencies.
I've always had sealed boxes and really like the sound, just wanted to try something different.
My current box is alot smaller (50 long x 10.25 tall x 7.25 bottom and 5.25 top), but these subs don't mind tight spaces. I was hoping to get deeper more fuller bass with a larger box. Am I thinking right?
Subs like larger boxes, but porting is another animal all together. I guess by fuller you mean more frequency response, from reading 12" speakers are good down to around 30hz and upto 200Hz although the consensus is 100Hz. The bigger the speaker, the lower the frequency it will play.
If you just want to play around, try stuffing the box full of poly fill stuffing. You can buy the expensive version from audio places or you can go to a craft store. Figure 1 lb per CF to start. It makes the subs believe they are in a bigger box.
