1965 f100 fuel tank
i have been doing some checking lately for a rear gas tank for my 65 f100. i want one to install in between the rear frame rails, behing the rear axle. and i thought i might give you guys an update. i found out that in 1970 ford used a 22 gal fuel tank in the mustangs, that will fit in between the frame rails of a 1965. and NAPA has them. also a company online has them for $120 new, without the sending unit. sending unit is $34. http://classic-mustang.com the dimensions are approx. 30"x24"x9". i am planning on ordering it from NAPA on monday, i should have it on Tuesday. i will update everyone on how the installation goes.oh by the way the filler is on top. so i am planning on cutting a hole in my bed floor far the filler, just like John Noilon did to his 53 f100 in the tech articles.

None of them. Why people want to mount the tank back there, I dunno. IMO, it's not a safe place to mount it.
The reason is...the same thing could occur with these trucks that occurred to the Pinto/Bobcat .. the exploding fuel tank FIASCO.
Tank mounted inches from the rear axle, tank composed of upper/lower sections spot welded together forming a 3/4" protruding lip around the circumference of the tank (ditto Mustang's and etc).
When these cars were rear ended, the seam of the tank hit the center section of the axle housing, split open...gas poured out...exploded.
Some people were burned to death. Not pleasant!
And btw: The same thing occurred with 1979/2012 Crown Vic/Mercury Grand Marquis. The FoMoCo 'fixum' was also the same. Install a hard plastic shield between the tank and rear axle.

Why would you want to move the tank? You will not gain any legroom by doing so. I know this because I'm 6-5 and bought a 1965 F100 brand new.
The only issue that occurs to the in-cab tank is the neoprene rubber filler hose age cracks, so gasoline vapors can seep out.
Some people are unaware, install a NON vented fuel cap, causing the tank and the hose to swell up.

Don't know what is wrong with mounting a gas tank back there, Ford trucks had them there from 1973 - 1996, as well as Bronco 1978 - 1996 and I have NEVER heard or seen one of those exploding in a ball of fire and I have seem some that have had the tailgate pushed up even with the back of the cab.
Yes the mustang tank will fit in the chassis, but have also seen Bronco tanks installed that I think would be a better choice.

I believe 78 and 79 would be the best. If you are running a fuel injected engine you "should" be able to use the 86 and up tank with the built in pump but that application could maybe be researched a bit more.

F100/350: 1967/72 optional mid-ship auxiliary tanks, 1973/96 mid-ship and aft axle tanks were mounted on the inside of the left frame rail, not behind the rear axle.
Since the 1971/80 Pinto/Bobcat & 1979/2012 Crown Vic/Grand Marquis fuel tanks exploded when rear ended, it's also possible that a tank swapped behind the rear axle of an F100/350 could also explode.
