Any body know if a Dana 40 axle will fit on my truck? I would like to switch over to 4 wheel drive and my truck already has a independent suspension with coil springs up front. Just did some research and found out the Dana 40 is on other Ford trucks with coil springs.
Ya a dana 44 is under rated for you truck. Ive seen a 2wd F-350 converted over to 4wd witha dana 60 still using the coils. It can be done and im sure theere is tons of info out there on it. I would not out a dana 44 under there.
I think a dana 44 would work fine, not as strong as a dana 60 but unless your doing 4 wheel burnouts on pavement or mud bogging with big tiresyou really dont need the extra beef. The main thing is with the 44 is keeping everything tight. If you keep tight axle joints, tight spindle bearings, tight ball joints, and tight wheel bearings the dana 44 is a pretty tough unit. I run a dana 44 in a Jeep and every once and a while I will pop a axle, but it is usually do to ramping and coming down hard on the frontend while still under throttle. I run the 44 because its at least 150# lighter(feels like more) than a 60. I have upgraded to high dollar mosier axles but have broke those too. I think in the last 5 years I might have broken 4-5 axles in 150-200 passes. If I was putting it in a F250 I and wanted to maintain the coils I would use a 1/2 ton out of a late 70's(coil sprung 44) and swap the late 70's 3/4 ton(leaf sprung 44) knuckles and hubs to get the eight lug patern. Although I do not know the frame width on your truck but I bet its pretty close to the 1/2 ton.
why convert? the 50 is more than adequate and rides nicer
Want to go to 4 wheel drive and was hoping to avoid switching to leaf springs. But someone said you can use the solid axle with the coils so I might go that way. Right now my main concern is what 60 can I use just saw this one for sale. $700..................Dana 60 front axle dwd code 610610-6 High Left (Driver) Balljoint 4.10 Open found in Ford 1996.5-97 F350 call 631-834-5796 ...........
Would it have to be from a truck that was a dually? If you think about it the front axle for a dually might be wider than one from a truck that wasn't a dually.

Dually 60's have spacer/extenders on the hubs and they are removable so no worries there. If your doing the work of the swap do a reverse shackle with some super duty springs. Good ride, good height, good axle!

That axle will work for you. You could use any D60 from an F350 from 86-97. There were not many duallys that were 4x4. SRW and DRW trucks both use the same width axle but on the dually there is an adaptor to widen the track to allow the use of the deep offset wheels. The adaptor can be bought separate and you may be able to use the one that's on your truck now.

Can you give me more detail about a reverse shackle? Not sure what you mean.

Thanks tryed to rep you all but you know how it is.
Well, I know the reverse shackle mod as a rear leaf spring mod. I guess it could be done in the front.
The rear bracket on the rear leaf spring is a shackle bracket with a bar, and it allows the spring to move up and down without breaking things. You just cut the rivets and flip it over. VIOLA 2 inches of lift for free.

TJ's advice is good to go!
Thanks for the info but I was hoping to get this done with the coil spring I have. Any advice on how to do that would be great.
