usually they just screw into the back and are sometimes easily changed on the truck, but yes the battery light comes on when the voltage drops to a certain point which usually means your alternator is on its way out. something else to check is to disconnect both batteries for about a half an hour then come back and check the voltage on both of them, and clean the posts. a dead or dying battery can also cause that light to come on by intermittantly shorting out the system.

check the batts under a load testing machine, check the alternatier by removing it and putting it on a output pesting machin if you are lucky o have one.

I had the alternator tested at autozone. tested good but because it was a not happening all the time doesn't mean it isn't bad. Went ahead and bought a new one. Truck has almost 3000,000 miles on it. Orginal alternator so. Batts are brand new.

My 6.0 doesnt have a external voltage regulator. I would address your problem now ive had to replace my alternator with no warning sign from the light.I had 2 new batteries shut the truck off while plowing to get fuel and would not restart. It was just barely charging.Dont get stuck out like i did.
