Dang oil Filter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I just completed my second oil change, and it was not very smooth.

1st job:
After 10 minutes of thinking I am going to rip the filter in half and leave it on the truck I finally got it off.

2nd job:

I was not as scared this time of punching a hole in the filter with the wrench, so instead I actually broke the wrench. Had to run and get another one. This is not good if the wrench's only last one change.

Questions:

Is there something I am doing wrong? I am using a strap wrench, the only kind I can find that will fit the monster filter. It is a bear to get this dang thing off. I wonder if I am ever going to get it off every time. I do wait and make sure I can get the filter off till I punch a hole in her to let her drain. arghh

You might be tightening the filter a little too much. A quality filter wrench helps a lot. Napa sells a MONSTER wrench, where the strap that grabs the oil filter is about 3" wide and takes a 1/2" ratchet. If you get one of those, you won't have to worry about not getting the filter off.

I will be changing my oil this afternoon and using the same strap wrench you used when you changed your oil here. I hope this helps with my romps.

Here is the answer for your dilemma:
An oil filter wrench that you can hook up to a 3' breaker bar and get the job done.
It is the one that I use and it doesn't even wrinkle the outer shell. Nice 360 degree compression on the filter and it just turns it off of the mount.

OIL FILTER WRENCH FROM NAPA
Part number BK 772320

It will if you're putting in syn and you've been running dino.

Bowie --> How tight are you cranking on that thing??? I put mine on hand tight, but I put as much on it with my hands as I can. NEVER had a leak, and it spins right off when it's OC time. I've never wrenched a filter on in my life, and I've never had one leak. Something to think about.

Rick,
Let me know how that goes.

I usually tighen all my filters by hand only. Most of the time, I can get the one off of my PSD with just my hands. I hand tighten larger filters on OTR trucks and Off Road Equipment also. They, however, usually take a wrench to remove them. Strap wrenches work well because they a pretty universal and get progressively tighter the harder you twist them.

Lisle sells a filter wrench specifically for this large size. They build decent tools, and I haven't broken mine yet.

I bought it on ebay, and it was quite reasonable, but I don't currently see any on there like it.

Well the first time someone else had put it on so no telling how hard they put it on. But the second one was all me. and it was a little more then hand tight as it leaked a little just by hand.

That napa filter looks good I need to go get on of those.

by the way I just put in synthetic after someone else was running dyno...great even tighter

I have always just hand tightened my filters in all my cars and trucks but this just does not seem to be working with this rig. probably operator error. not the first time. just weird it is so dang hard to get off.

On every vehicle I've owned that had an external oil filter, I've always lubed the o-ring with fresh oil and hand tightened it on the motor w/ clean hands. I've never had a leak and taking it off has been easy every time.

I'm going to have to check out that NAPA filter wrench if my nylon strap filter wrench doesn't work.

Ive used motorcraft and napa filters and I always tighten my filters my hand. I lube up the seal before I put it on too. Taking it off is usally a little hard but it always comes off and Ive never had a leak.
