well I was thinking you could weld it in and then use a grinder(or very slowly with metal sandpaper stuff) to smooth it out and then maybe even a very very thin layer of bondo and paint and you'd never notice, maybe?

I'm also thinking about maybe finding a radio that doesn't work or have a good shop make up the face for it and make an AM/FM cd player that fits in the old slot and looks like the original. (CD might have to be a satellite install) but I think it could be done!

There are peeps that take original AM radios, add FM or Tape Decks or CD players, tho there isn't much space in the 1961/66 radios to do this.
The 1961/66's only came with one AM radio, two versions were offered: tube and transistor.
