two new leaks fixed...how common

I just took my truck in for service to check on some oil leaks in the driveway. Still under extended warrenty for a couple more thousand miles. They diagnosed the leaks as the rear main seal and the crankshaft seal. Are these very common...and if not any ideas what happened??

Rear main seal is VERY rare! Not sure about the crankshaft seal....I haven't heard of that one, but who knows. Usually the oil leaks are the O-rings on the HPOP, oil pickup line from the pan, or a very sick Turbo.....make sure to get it checked out again before warranty is up!

I think mine is leaking from the rear main also.... I plan on finding the leak this weekend, wish mine was still under warranty.

Check the valley.. I would be worried if someone were to go in and replace the rear main, and it wasnt needed.

Take it to a car wash and clean out the engine V before tearing the engine down. Someone posted here that oil leak in the V can leak down to the rear of the engine and look like a rear seal. Thats my problem. Haven't found leak yet though.

That is 2 rear main seals at the same time. I bet if yall clean the valley with simple green and a water hose, you will find the leak to be on top of the valley. Most all leaks on the top of the engine will leak across the back of the engine. I would make them check closer.

I'm with everyone else. Grab a flashlight and check the top of the motor (valley) for leaks. If it's under warranty, don't bother cleaning it up. If you can find puddles of oil on top of the motor, just point that out to the mechanic and tell him to fix whatever is causing that.

Now if you find a leak there, I would be very leary of the mechanic who diagnosed your leak. Question him repeatedly on what he finds wrong, and what parts he will use to fix the leak. If he talks about replacing o-rings, ask what kind of material the o-rings will be made of so you know you're not getting something inferior that will fail again quickly.

Find another repair shop, cause this one has no idea what they are looking at.

Rear main seal, and crankshaft seal almost never go bad on a PSD. This sounds like a shop that needs to make some money, and since your warranty is paying for it they are trying to.

As others have said, your leak is probably top side, and the oil is running down the back of the engine. clean engine with simple green and LOW PRESSURE water. do not use the high pressure gun at the car wash.(too many sensors that dont work right when HP water is forced into them)

As stated, rear main leaks are very rare, and to have two on the boards at once? I would be surprised if either are leaking there. Several rear mains have been replaced only to have the leak still there. Even without oil in the valley, it could still be coming for the very back of the oil system. Clean everything up good, maybe even buy some dye, get you a good inspection mirror and find that leak before you pull the seals.

I think maybe someone may have mentioned that it might not be the rear main seal...

OK, sarcasm aside. I had my truck in a couple years back for the last factory warranty work before it expired for a "rear main" leak. The real fix, HPOP orings, Turbo o-rings both were shot and were replaced. Most credible shops will do the UV dye test and diagnosis to determine the source of the leak. I would try another shop.
