It appears my windshield is leaking. I will be removing the interior trim to see where it is coming from. I was wondering if sealing it from the inside is good or should I remove the windshield exterior trim and seal it out there also?
Is there other common areas for a 1986 Supercab to leak?
The windshield could leak due to a windshield replacement or rust around the windshield. The gasket is usually a thick tar-like substance (different names from different manufactures...depending on who installed it previously, 3M comes to mind along others)
You will need to remove the trim around the outside and inside to locate the area that water is dripping from, and decide if its rust or the rubber/tar like substance that is at fault. Water has a funny way of running along the edges of the roof line and getting inside along the windshield as a way out. So it could be anywhere where its coming in at, and not just at the area where the water drips.
To test remove the inside trim and take you shop vac and reverse the flow so it is blowing. Then take the trim off the front, and use spray bottle with soap and water. Move along the window on the inside with the shop vac and spray the outside at same place of contact. When you see bubbles you found the leak!
i had a 89 bii and the top corners where leaking, well i spent 150 for a new winsheld installed to fix the leaking problem. well after the place installed the windshield and i was getting ready to pay they told me i had rust around the windshield and that the warrinty will not count on leaks. they told me they cleaned the rust and put more window siel in them places. he told be if it leaked to put some lear silicone on the outside of the trim. well a week later we get rain and it leaked. so i did that and it worked. i dont know how long for it is down the road now. but my 86 f250 leaked across the top, so i took there advice again and cault the trim on the glass plus the body and put a nice welders bead on the inside of the windshield and she dryer than asfault on a 210 deg day. to the point. dont wast your money on a new windshield.
Check the join where the roof of the cab meets the cab pillars. This is a classic leak spot on these trucks.
Remove the inside, and outside windshield moldings. You will have to remove your dash pad to reach the two lower screws on the bottom of the interior moldings. Check and see if there is rust around the joins, or if the Automotive Caulking has become brittle and is cracking.
If so, remove all the old Auto Caulk, and replace it with fresh caulk, and it should fix those leaks around the joins.
Another area to check for leaks is around the Cargo Light, and roof marker lights if applicable. Check the gaskets etc...
