sealed or open intake?

I'm looking to get an air intake and can't decide between an open intake like an AEM or AFE or a sealed unit like the Volant or S&B. My thinking says that an open intake will pull more air but the sealed intake will pull cooler and possibly cleaner air. What are your thoughts and experiences with these intakes? Thanks in advance.

I think your engine is pulling all the air it needs in the stock configuration. It's only going to pull the volume of the cylinder, regardless of what you do unless you put a blower on it, or a turbo and FORCE air into the cylinders. I also think the temerature of the air is going to be the same as the temp of the air going through your stock air filter. If you pack the cai tube full of dry ice, it might cool it down a few degrees. It'll make a cool noise with a cai though. That's MY opinion.

right now I'm leaning towards the AEM Brute Force becuase it has an oil-less filter. I also heard a clip on youtube with a 5.4L and that was the only mod and it sounded awesome.

The Volant rocks.

but either setup will provide plenty of air. The sealed unit will minimize engine heat inputs.

I've had both types (Volant and Roush)...and I prefer the Volant hands down

I'm getting ready to put a JLT intake on my 08. It's a bit different design than most but I have heard good results

Same here. It works very well. Also has the dry media filter which makes it even nicer.

i know the big issue with mines is that i can't seam to keep the mud and water out of it being one of those air aid kits...never was a problem till i got my big tires and right now i have the hole thing tore apart to clean ...

so if you gonna do any wheeling keep that in mined it goes all through the engine bay

I wouldn't run ANY CAI on these trucks without a custom tune. These trucks are just as sensitive to intake changes as the 3v Mustangs are. The Mass Air housing is the same as the JLT 3v kits so you can start with the MAF transfer function for one of those if you don't have one already built for this kit. I am waiting till I get back on the dyno before installing mine and I'll be making an 87, 93 and E85 tune.

I have always liked the enclosed filters. I have a Volant and bought it when they used the oiled filters. I recently bought the replacement dry filter and I like it even more. I have not ever had a problem with it.

According to my new live wire air temps with with the stock intake run an average of about 5 degrees above outside air.Depends on your speed but pulling from the fenders not to bad
