Randomally stalls in reverse

Ive been noticing my truck will sometime stall out in reverse when the truck is cold. It acts like the tc is locking up but i dont see how it is. If i throw my switch for the tc lock it will not lock

Could it be something sticking in the trans or tc somehow grabbing?

If it stalls in reverse, try manually shifting it in 1st gear. If it tries to stall in manual 1 also, you are likely looking at a rebuild.

My 97 did that when I bought it. Would stall in reverse, and when I would shift it into 1st gear. I'm not a transmission guy, but I believe the seals between the clutch packages were letting fluid through that wasn't suppose to be doing, if that makes any sense. By the way, it only did that when it was warm, never when cold.

Thought I read on here before that it might be your transmission filter loose from its housing. They make a clip to keep it from slipping out of the fitting. Just a thought.

Mine does this to but only since i did coon's mod to the accumulator body. I think that it has to do with the ........, words not coming to me at the moment, but they are the vavle type things that are part of the accuumlator. I got mine outta a different tranny so i had no down time and i think they were faulty or something. I just kinda deal with it and hope the tranny lasts till next summer.

Low line pressure can make the torque converter clutch drag when it should be off. It can drag enough to stall the engine.

Low line pressure can be caused by low trans fluid, loose filter, internal leaks from bad seals, or a worn pump.

So if you go to the TSB section and find something that sounds like the problem your having...like the one I found sounds like the issue here:
<TABLE style="BORDER-RIGHT: black 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: black 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: black 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: black 1px solid" itxtvisited="1"><TBODY itxtvisited="1"><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">TSB data for: 1997 FORD F250</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Bulletin Number: 12248</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Sequence Number: 615504</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Date: 19981201</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Component Name: 103000 POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Make: FORD</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Model: F250</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Year: 1997</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">Summary:</TD></TR><TR itxtvisited="1"><TD itxtvisited="1">SOME HEAVY DUTY AND SUPER DUTY VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT VARIOUS TRANSMISSION CONCERNS, INCLUDING STALL ON TRANSMISSION ENGAGEMENT AND / OR A BUZZ NOISE ON ENGAGEMENT. *TT</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Where do you find more information - like what might fix it? (let me guess - you just ask on this forum!?) Are the TSB's a good place to start or are the too generic?

Mark, when i go into reverse i have to hold on the brake for 3-5 seconds before it ingauges and then it takes off like a bat outta hell, does that sound like a low line pressure thing or is it something completly different? If i kinda feather the throttle a couple times like its a standard it works quicker and it is less harsh.

Welcome to the site! It's always nice to see new people.

As for the TSB's, I never check them mainly because I forget they are here! Thanks for reminding me about them. I'm sure they're a good source to check out, but there are a lot of folks on here that have 1st hand experience in dealing with whatever problem you may be having.

You will find over time that there are certain people on here that can help you in ways that a TSB won't. They'll be able to talk you through some problems, and give you short cuts that can make a tough job a lot easier.

That's a nice looking truck you have there.

A delayed engagement and fast take off does sound like low line pressure. It could be from any of the causes I listed above.

drilling the holes in the accumulator body will not cause this concern, more likely its what mark stated since reverse demands more line pressure and the clutch can drag causing the stall

If you take the pan off and the filter is sitting in the pan the filter was loose.
