The shop I took my truck too in Nov. when it would not start.
Well they got it run better, but it still starts and stalled when cold. Took back they re adjusted it and said that is all they could do without going into charging me a pile of money.
The second time the truck ran good, but sounded like I was at the races. Reving so fast. I slowly turn the idle speed so I was no longer running a 1/4 mile strip. The truck runs good with the exception that I think the carb now has a garden hose running to it. Like today. Drove to work and back nowhere else. Took more than a 1/4 tank. A good $20.00 worth. The mileage sucks since they worked on it. I'm out $200 and today it would not start cold. I had to spray ether in the carb.Once in the morning and again after work.
Both me and my wife like the truck, but cannot keep goingthrough the petro like this. It is too hard on the pocket book.
I like to get anew truck, but that right now is out of the question with us refinancing our mortgage and paying off debts.
Where is there a good shop in the city that works on Carbs. I know everyone says Paragon. Well I know the owner and have not had much good luck dealing with him. He worked on other vehicles of mine and never got better mileage. But I may have to in this case.
my uncle owns ok tire on circle drive. A much as i dont like my uncle he only hires the best techs as he builds high end hot rods to sell in the states and gets his guys to do most of the mechanical work on them. A little pricey but they do awesome work. Just food for thought. Also do NOT take it to Glenwood auto service, it'll cost more and prolly not be fixed afterwards.
consider changing over to a TB fuel injection kit Glen... not hard to do, better economy, less tinkering, and what you pay for the parts might be less than a couple of trips to the shop. they're pretty simple to install as well.

Since I`m not up on it what is the cost of the TB fuel injection kit, a Holley I presume?
If it`s what I think it might be ($800 US + labour?) then I think the cost will be close to a used EFI equipped Ford truck for a little more than the price of the conversion.
One alternative is to swap in a 300-6 for the very best fuel economy possible in a full sized truck if a reasonably priced donor vehicle could be found.
you might be right Fom... the $400 figure sticks in my head, but i think thats just for the throttle body. not sure if you can put them on a stock intake manifold or not. some research would have to be done. i briefly looked into it for my '83 when i had it but i can't remember what i had come up with.
Thats good quality aftermarket stuff too, a guy could always put a efi system off of a stock ford.
Glen does have that other truck with the straight 6 in it, but that 351 shouldnt be as terrible as it is either. That truck is almost too nice to be swappin engines out of, with that low of km on it!
I been thinking about replating my 85 with the 300 in it. I need new springs on it and afew other things, but right now it gets way better mileage than the 351 does. The 86 has never been great on gas. I think that truck is jinxed on gas.
When it goy hit in the door my wife was hoping it to be written off. Mainly because of the gas milage it got. Yet she likes driving it.
I was just kidding about that anyways that would be a pretty big change just for fuel economy!
Ive heard alot of guys say in the efi years that the 302 was about the best on fuel though, although ya know how it goes, the guys with the 300 think that engine is the best, the guys with the 351 think that engine is the best, and the guys with the 302 KNOWS that that engine is the best haha Jokes
