I always though your 53 would get better than 8 mpg but it depends alot on the rear axle ratio. I know it was geared very low before the axle swap, did the mileage pick up after or you haven`t checked that out yet?
The 300 is good on gas. but is a power engine for torque pulling. I like the 300 in my 85. I also found in studies that a 302 gets better gas mileage than a 300. Not by much 2 or 3 miles more even 5.
But the 300 gives more pulling power than a 302 they claim.
I rather keep the truck all numbers matching original. I like to fix the rust on it and give it a paint job. Then I might end up selling it.
Sadly it is not old enough to be a antique and new enough to get the deserved price it should get.
Even though it is a great truck and I like yours too Glen, the 1980-1991 trucks arent worth a whole lot, and most likely will never gain antique value.
The wheel wells on the box the last year started to rust through. I was going to get patch panels and fix them. Also the cab just starting to show rust at the bottom of the cab. I was going to address this too before it gets away. The rest is surface rust where the paint peeled off.
Hope everything is ok with Matt.
Weld in the patch panels, spray it hot rod black or with Zero Rust satin black then drive the wheels off of it and the whole time you`ll be saving big on fuel Glen.
