I am looking for a anti theft device for my 03' F-350 5.4, and was looking into getting one of these VANDAL ALERT Theft Avoidance Module until I saw the price. I am not a fan of alarms as they tend to give false alarms at times and many people ignore them. I would like to put in a starter interupt but am having troubles figuring out how to properly do it so I won't have an issue down the road that would leave me stranded. Anyone have a how - to or a diagram on what they did to install a switch interupt? it seems to be a cheap way to keep people from stealing the truck (or will at least deter some poeple) and was also thinking of possibly vin etching the windows (which I am trying to debate if it's worth it or not and I have heard someone say that it's not a good idea as people are now resorting to stealing vin numbers????? which I have no idea on what someone would be able to do with it??? but seems like a good idea to keep chop shops from wanting to steal it due to the glass being no value to them)
A simple solution is to interrupt the fuel system. Remove the fuel pump fuse and insert a wire with a spade terminal into one side running to a fuse holder then continue the wire to a switch in the cab. Now return the wire to the fuse block ending with another spade terminal. Now you have a simple anti-theft system.
The window etch is a joke don't bother. All a person has to say is that they replaced the glass with one from a parts yard. Other parts are worth a lot more than the glass.
You can't stop a VIN thief as your VIN is visible through the windshield. A VIN is used to make a counterfeit VIN tag to install on a stolen vehicle so that it appears to be a legitimate vehicle.
I would prefer to put a switch to the starter rather than the fuel pump. I don't wan't to be driving down the road and all of the sudden the truck just dies due to the switch being burnt up for whatever reason. (maybe nothing won't happen but havn't experimented with security features / cut-off switches) I have a wiring diagram of my truck starter system but not sure how to post it on here (It seems a good way would be to have a relay connected but not sure which wires to use to do it correctly.
The way alarm systems do this is with a relay. 30 and 87a are your starter wire(red/lt blu) cut so the key end is 87a and the lock cylinder end is 30, so when the relay is at rest, the circuit is complete. To activate it, 86 is connected to the dk blu/lt grn wire and your switch goes to ground. The idea with this is the relay will only disconnect the starter when the switch is grounded and there is power to the ignition wire. You want to do it this way because it will not drain the battery, the disable is only working when you try to start it and not all of the time.
You can do the same for the ignition system and the fuel system. If you want to get crafty, you can take a multi pin connector of any type and run the start, Ign and accy wires through it. On the side you remove, make jumpers to connect the right wires together. This is similar to what the ravelco unit does.
You can also try disabling the Neutral/Park safety switch. This will shut down the starter as well, but I don't know what the ECM/Relays need to see to start.
