My 90 superduty will drive about 5 miles then die on me, I take off the fuel filter its about 20% full. So I fill it back up and it goes another 5 miles. Had to do that about 7 times to get home pulling a cattle trailer. Not sure if its stuff in the tank or Injection pump? It has new fuel pump. Any ideas? thanks guys!
If the fuel filter is emptying then either your new lift pump is defective or there's some sort of restriction in the system preventing it from delivering enough fuel. You might try an electric lift pump and new supply lines (bypass the mechanical lift pump, don't run them in series). This should be about $60 in parts, if this doesn't fix it then you may have a restriction in the tank pickup tube or the IP may actually be bad.
A very close examination of the fuel supply lines will probably result in you finding a rusty fuel line that is letting air into the supply line.
All of your fuel lines should be synthetic except for the tank fittings, and the line from the tank selector valve to the engine lift pump.
That metal line where it crosses the cross member is an excellent place to find rust under the clips that hold it to the frame.
Do you see any fuel leaks on the engine?
Return lines around the injectors, top of IP, and up to the fuel filter?
Are you sure the fuel filter gasket is in right and tight enough?
How about a leak around the fuel heater connection on top of the fuel filter header?
Those are the most common points for air intrusion.
PS did you replace the lift pump or did someone else do it?
If the lift pump had a straight arm, there should have been directions in the box with the pump.
If they were not followed to the letter the new lift pump may be damaged.
I was guessing what Dave put at the end of his reply: improperly installed lift pump. They are appearently easy to put on incorrectly if you treat it like a gas engine install.
the fuel pump was replaced by someone else, awhile back. I bought it a 3 hour drive from the house. Not sure how I made it home with this problem. I've been dreading taking out the tanks for inspection, but maybe I need to start there to eliminate that cause? I would really prefer an electric pump. Any suggestions on one? This truck is such a hoss, just small problems to fix, then the turbo!
