2001 powerstroke start problems

2001 powerstroke makes a loud grinding sound to a whine when trying to start...used to be intermittent now it won't catch at all....starter? Sometimes it will catch and turn briefly before stopping the crank.

Check your flywheel too. YOu may have ground a bad spot in the teeth.
