DTC codes
I usually post in the SD and 6.0 forums, but I've got a buddy that's having issues with his Navigator. Failed emissions, we pulled codes with my SCT, came up with P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) and P0171 & P0174 (I think-they were for left & right banks lean). Anyway, could the 0401 code be causing the other 2. I mean, if the computer senses not enough EGR does it pull back on the throttle enough to lean out the fuel mixture? And what's the best way to fix it? Is pulling the EGR and cleaning it usually good enough? I know that I've read a lot on the 6.0 PSD that the EGR can cause all kinds of problems, are they that bad for the gas motors too? BTW, he's got the 5.4, not sure if it's the 2v or 3v, I'll have to check into that. It's an '01 or '02, I'm pretty sure, the older body style, got around 180k on the clock, i think.
Thanks, Jim
If your scan tool can look at the 'freeze frame' data, it would be interesting to see what code actually turned the light on.
If I was to take a SWAG, you maybe looking at a vacuum leak in the control side of the EGR valve. A vacuum leak there could keep the EGR from opening when it should, triggering the P0401 and at the same time causing both banks to go lean. It may still idle fine as the EGR solenoid shuts off the vacuum when at idle, thus getting rid of the vacuum leak.
Mind you, this is just a SWAG . . . .
