What year C6 do I have?

How do you tell apart different year C6s? My truck came with a manual tranny but now has a C6. The dipstick is on the passenger side and comes up behind the valve cover. The Chiltons manual says a 1974 C6 has the dipstick on the drivers side. Does the year of the tranny matter what fluid I put in it? Before I knew that it wasn't the original tranny I put a 1/2 quart of Mercon III in it like the Chiltons manual states for a 74.

Also how do I tell what year steering coulmn I have?

My 75 F100 4x4 c6 trans which was behind a 360 then 460 and now a 429 with a rebuild and some inerds swapping, long story. It has always has the dipstick on the passenger side behind the valve cover. I always run the type f and the last time I rebuilt the trans was 94 and its still going strong with the second engine since the rebuild. Just got back from Iowa 300 miles each way and no problems. Not an expert on what year fits what though. Does your steering column have the reverse, neutral switch on the column near the floor or on the trans? That would answer a lot of questions.

Hey,
__I got a 77' owner's maual that might be of some help with Numberdummy.
You can find him in the 67-72 trucks forums.

Here, it's from the O-manual: C6 automatic trans takes: C7AZ-19582-A,or B Ford Specification: ESP-M2C138-CJ.

They stopped selling that stuff along time ago.

I have never seen a ford trans with a dipstick on the drivers side.

Dirt racer, how did you get a FE trans to bolt up to a 460?

CHILTON MANUAL IS WRONG!
ATF

Type F was used thru 1976.

1977 and later uses MERCON.

It's not a good thing to mix transmission fluids.

1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog / MOTOR OILS and LUBRICANTS / XT-2QDX .. Automatic Transmission Fluid "MERCON"

Application: 1977/79 C4 & C6.

The Ford Transmission ID tag is bolted to the case - - drivers side above the manual control lever, or on the Servo Cover, also on the drivers side.

If a 76 and older trans has been rebuilt in recent times (say 10+ years) chances are good that the clutches used will be compatible with either fluid. I have no clue however to tell if the trans has that upgrade or not. Mixing fluids is bad, of course, I wish there was an easy way to tell the difference between the two fluids with out the use of oil analysis.

I would try and find that id tag so you can find out for sure. As far as my FE C6. I took the guts from the 4x4 trans with the different length shaft and the tail shaft and use a LTD C6 case from behind a 400 motor. Worked great.

Wow! I am impressed with the number of responses. I have been on Mustang and Corvette forums for years without this many responses.

I have not looked for a tag on the transmission but I am sure it is gone just like ever other tag. Are there any part numbers cast into the case that would lead me in the right direction?

What will happen if I mix transmission fluid? Should I just drain it all and replace it so I know what's in it? The previous owner said it was rebuilt 7,000 miles ago.

There is not a neutral safety switch on the column. I have no backup lights and it will start in drive. Does that mean it is bypassed? It has tilt, was that offered in 74?

If it was me I would drain it out and put type F in it. Last time I rebuit my 75 c6 was 94 and that is what I run. My 75 steering column has a hole on the top down by the floor, there is suspose to be a tang that sticks out and moves the neutral, back up light switch. I have seen pictures posted on here before. Might want to do a search. The newer ones like 77 or 78 the switch moved to the side of the transmission. Not sure but tilt might have been an option on the fancy versions. Was on some 60's mustangs and cougars.

1973/77 = the NSS is on the column.

1978/79 = the NSS is on the transmission.

Beginning in 1975, if it has Cruise, it also has a tilt wheel.

Some peeps don't realize they have a tilt wheel, because on all the newer stuff, the tilt wheel works by a separate lever.

On vehicles of this vintage, the tilt wheel works off the turn signal handle.

Pull the turn signal handle (gently) towards you.

I do not have cruise control but to tilt the wheel you push away, not pull. I had an 86 F-250 that had seemed to be the same type of tilt.

Glad you like this forum. Anyway I went out to the garage and pulled the transmission dipstick on my 73 thunderbird and it says right on it to use type F fluid. If yours still has the original dipstick it should say on it what to use. Just another idea.

With tilt...if you look at the steering column flanges of 1960's/70's cars, 1975/79 trucks, you'll notice there's about a 1/2" space above the lever.

On these, you pull the lever towards you.

The Ford trans code will have a three letter prefix (PBY, PJA, etc.), then a one or two letter suffix (A / AA), there may be a following number (A1 / AA1), there may not.

Numbers found on transmission parts are only ID numbers for the particular part the number is found on..

D7AP-7A040-AA for example, is one of several C6 extension housings.

The dipstick may have an ID number on it (D3AP-7A020-AA for example), but that's not a guarantee of what it came from, or what the trans is.

If you post the trans code...and/or the dipstick number, I can ID it.

The trans code will tell, when decoded, what the trans is, and exactly what it came from.

The dipstick only says check while hot in idle. Someone has scribed "full" below the "add" mark. I will look under it tomorrow for more numbers.

For the tilt it definitely pushes away for it to tilt.
