Mounting Lund Visor
Mounting Lund Visor
O.K., stupid question #22817: To mount the new Lund visor [which I know some of you guys hate but we'll get to that after answering the question] you need to drill in the center of the roof. Is the hood strong enough to kneel on to get out that far? Otherwise, how would one get out there to drill/mount the visor?
By the way, it's the Lund 19065 with the ident./clearance lights already in it. I've always liked the visor and wanted to add the ident./clearance lights and putting the visor on is less drilling than the lights. If anyone has done one of these before feel free to chime in.
Also, does anyone have comments on using self-tapping screws into the body? I know the steel isn't as thick/strong as it used to be and I certainly don't want to strip any out. I'm going to be mounting a set of F650/750 mirrors shortly also and eliminating the elephant ear mirrors. I'll be using stainless self-tapping screws for this also. Any comments?
Thanks,
Later...

I haven't done a superduty, but the F150 and S10 kits used a self sticking center studs. I would not climb on the hood, but I am not small. I would use step ladders to get me up enough to reach.
The kits I have done came with self tapping screws to go into the apiller/roof channel in the door. They were pretty big, not the little #8s or 10s, more like 1/4". It should have the hardware you need in the kit. If you didn't get hardware, call lund and they are pretty good about sending it out.

Don't get upset if your hood dents but I am fairly certain you can kneel on it and it will be fine. I got super drunk at a tailgate party I threw, and when we killed the second keg I allegedly jumped on the roof of my truck holding the empty keg over my head like the stanley cup, then jumped on the hood and did the same, then threw the keg.
I do have a pucker in the sheet metal, but considering the story as I am told (I was pretty drunk...) I a 230lb guy jumped on it with a keg held high... given that I think you'll be fine kneeling on it.
Also, at the drive in my little lady and I sit on the hood and use the windshield as a recliner with our pillows.
Good luck with the visor, please post pics once it's done, I've been wanting one real bad!
