Explorer Body Stripe

I'm pretty sure I have an NOS stripe kit for that. I'll have to look at it to make sure it's the right one. I do know that it's in wicked good shape and very pliable still. I also have a friend with a sign shop that could reproduce it. I would imagine that it's no big deal. If anyone knows what the part number should be let me know so I can double check and help this guy out.
What color is the set you have? You can PM me as I have some questions about them. Looking for a set.

I plan to recreate my 77 f150 Explorer stripes by painting them on my truck and IMO painting the stripes over the BC and then sealing them under the clear looks way better then putting a vinyl sticker on top of the paint. The only reason to do such a thing IMO would be because you wanted to do a numbers matching restoration on your truck or your truck has already been painted and you wanted an easy way to add a stripe kit on it. If there was a quality 77 Explorer Stripe kit available I might consider using it, but I do not know of any and I would not risk my new paint to a 30 year old NOS stripe kit even if I could find one. If you wanted the stripes to have a raised look to them that can be accomplished by adding the appropriate pin striping on either side of the painted graphics. If you like the non-gloss look to your graphics then you use the appropriate paint on top of the clear coat.

Thats SWEET there Bigshelby! I remember my dad had one just like that with a three on the tree. His was a 73, and I think he got it in 75, and put power steering on it. He then traded it in when he got his burnt orange 77 F150 Explorer custom. I was 16 when he got it, and just started to dirve, and of course he let me enjoy it often. That why I got my 77 Explorer custom earlier this year.

That’s cool looking through all the different years of Explorers. I love the seat fabric selection. My 77 has the brown/white/black plaid seat fabric in it, how seventy-ish! I just have to laugh when I see that and think back how that was stylin back in the day. Kind of reminds me of pants that some of the older guys wore then up to their arm pits!

If you do have one I would be interested no matter what the shape it is in. Like you said a sign shop could reproduce one from an original. And having an original to go by would be a lot better than trying to measure one. Especially around the wheel wells where it gets narrower.

Here's what my 77 F150 Custom Explorer looked like when I bought it 3 years ago:
I'm in the process of doing a frame-off restoration on it right now and I do still want to recreate the 77 Explorer stripes using a similar cream/tan color, but the truck will now be a Dark Forrest Green instead of the brown. I am also changing the 78-79 front grill etc back to the 77 parts.

Does anyone know what the different explorer colors were available for 1977? Also the different stripe colors. On the 77 I only remember seeing the cream color, but thought I saw one in red with white stripes.
I did see one that was silver, and it had dark blue stripes, but I didn’t believe that was factory.

Is that one of the stripes you're looking for? If so I still have the stripes listed in that thread.

Sadly I don’t think so. From the best I can tell, I need D3TZ-1020000-G. Thanks for the reply though.

You're looking for the white stripe (G) correct? Black would end with a "K".
Unfortunately no dealer or obsolete supplier has any.
I have a '73 Explorer also and do have a partial tape stripe kit (part of it was destroyed by battery acid). When I do finally get around to painting the ol' girl there's enough there that I can use it as a masking guide. I'm planning on painting the stripes on.
If you decide to paint the stripes on, there's one thing I've noticed people tend to do. If they paint the stripes on, they almost always paint the wide stripe the same width the full length of the stripe. This isn't correct. The stripe actually thins out when it goes over the wheel wells. I have, however, seen Ford adds that used a pre-production truck that had the stripe the full width but on production models the stripe thins out.
