I've been in the market for a 73-79 4x4 and am going to look at a couple this weekend.
Question is how can I tell what engine it has. The one i'm most interested in is a '75 f100 4x4 with a 4spd and 390. Is there an easy way to tell if in fact it actually is a 390?
well I have seen that the 351C is in the 351M/400 engine family, too. but IIRC on the main forum page the 351C is in the 302/351W engine family.......unless they just put it in there?
Bring a dowel, pencil, tape measure, 13/16-15/16 sockets, four inch extension and ratchet to remove the plug, and turn the crank. Make a mark at the bottom of the pistons travel, and make a mark at the top. Measure the two lines, 3.5" is a 360, 3.75" is a 390. If it comes out different, measure it again. If it comes out different from that, re-measure it. If it comes out past the 390 mark, and has a counterweight on the harmonic balancer, do not say anything cept "yep, its a 390"(or whatever the seller says it has) pay the seller the asking price, and haul a$$ home.
