got the heads off tonight and the drivers side front piston is where the head gasket blew. and the metal ring in the gasket is now lodged in the valve.... AND where the piston was hitting that ring I now have a wear mark/groove in the top of my piston. BUT the walls of that cylinder are OK. or so it seems. that small groove in the piston won't hurt anything will it? going to have the headed check over and make sure they are ok.
and while I have the heads off is there anything else on the motor I should check/tweak/mod ect. ect?
The mark int he piston should be ok but looks for any cracking and remove any sharp edges it may have left. Also you need to check the height of the piston at the top of the cylinder against the rest of them. Blow head gaskets has been known to bend rods and if not caught the rod will later break.
Sorry to hear about the blown headgasket, but as for mods how about firerings? headstuds? port and polish heads? LoL. just lookin' for things you could mod while your in there to make it all seem more worth while. haha.
For the mods I would go with fire rings, high rev springs, hypermax valves, chromoly pushrods, head studs, and port an polish it..... But thats if I were to hit the mega-millions lol. But I would atleast do some studs while your in there.
homemade polish job, i dont think porting will matter a whole lot unless you start adding tons of mods to it. its like putting the headers on a 7.3..... although i think i would put headers on just so i could say i did it...lol
I agree on the studs if you can get them in there. I have heard it can be done with the heads on but you have to lift the cab on one side a bit. You should be fine with the heads off.

temporarily
David Lott @ diesel innovations (DI for short) has been experimenting with tubular, ceramic coated headers. they're actually proving quite beneficial. One user (jonford on powerstrokenation) has described it as:
cut spoolup time in half
lower EGT's
+2 mpg
better sound
and there were some other things too... but they are making them!
End Hijack. sorry.
