What's Wrong With Athletes Today?

After hearing about Plaxico Burress, now I see that Sean Avery of the Dallas Stars made a very insulting comment in front of a news camera in the locker room. I won't repeat it. You can find it easily on the web. How can these guys be so stupid? Don't they realize how blessed they are to be pro athletes making millions of dollars? And kids look up to them. Like it or not, they are role models. They are in the public spotlight. Is it really that hard to know when to keep your mouth shut or use common sense? I am starting to wonder why I spend my time and money watching sports. Many of them don't deserve all the attention they get.

They are a bunch of immature individuals who are wealthy beyond imagination and who have never been made to adhere to normal societal standards. Doesn't apply to all...does apply to a lot of them.

Exactly. They think that because they have fame and fortune that they can do whatever they want.

It seems we don't often hear the stories about athletes who give back to their communities or donate time and money to worthy causes. I think a good number of them are decent people who contribute to society beyond their athletic abilities.

That doesn't make for as good of headlines as reporting the antics of the idiots.

This is the main reason I quit watching sports about 20yrs. ago. The solution is simple, If you don't like them or their attitudes, don't watch or support them. If enough people would do this instead of lowering their standards just to watch a game, you would see a whole different attitude in the athletes. It seems that the more negative publicity they get, the more they are worshiped. Then we wonder why this country is in the shape it is in.

Until these teams stop signing these over paid prima donas, and fans quit paying to see them(that will never happen!) they will keep on their path to glory.

When I was a kid back in the '60's you could go to Yankee Stadium, eat a hot dog and drink a coke without emptying your life's savings. Guys like Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle would pose for pictures and sign autographs for free. Now, you have to go to an autograph session and pay up to $50 to get a signed picture. I think the main difference between now and then is that then the players played for the love of the game and the fans. You could look up to them; they earned your respect. Today it is all about the $$$, and the athletes are above the law " gangstas " who don't even respect themselves........

Professional athletes are admired too much.

They are not more than entertainers, but the idiot jock worshippers grovel before them instead of admiring people who do useful things in science, medicine, engineering, etc.

It is all the fault of the public, because the public make it necessary to pay entertainers competitive wages and spoil them. Of course the entertainers sometimes act out. They are gods to morons.

I don't support professional athletics of any kind.

"what would they do if they actually had to WORK for a living."

They DO work and train hard. They are physically accomplished and capable. They charge what the market will bear. Some of them behave like spoiled children, but they wouldn't if the drooling sports fans didn't follow their every move. Worshipping jocks is nothing more than latent homosexuality.

Amen! I don't watch sports for the same reasons. This isn't just "professionals". You also see it at the high school and college level, folks who think that because they are big, fast, etc. and have been pampered by a system which lets them get away with things other students can't get away with, they can do whatever they want and get away with it.

Sooner or later they grow old, get injured, or really screw up and end up penniless with a system that doesn't want them any longer (gee, I wonder why?). Athletes blowing through their cash because they believe income equals wealth (wealth is what you save, not what you spend) is a major downfall of the many of them after their athletic career is over. My violin doesn't play for them.

What many of the college players don't realize is that being good in college doesn't do much for the majority of them (Hershal Walker...) and they end up as wannabe non-pro players dreaming about their glory days. And those in the pros who carry their thug behavior into full adult-hood after college end up screwing up to the point where a team no longer covers for their mistakes...

I hear that the Dallas Stars will not be asking Avery back after the suspension. As a Boston Bruins fan I am saddened by this news. Avery played the game like the words he spoke. Basically, and dirty good for nothing punk. Will to take any and all cheap shots (Dion Phaneuf's girl friend formerly Avery's girlfriend)... I was hoping for another meeting this season wtih Dallas so that Avery and Ott (long story) would get what is coming to them.

The best thing about hockey is fighting is LEGAL and it is policed by the players not the officials.

there are some sick people in this world and some of them happen to be athletes.
There are bad doctors, lawyers, priests, auto body detailers, fisherman, mothers, police, kids, shoe salespeople, teachers, Presidents, army officers, truck drivers, window cleaners, babysitters, parents, wives, bosses, convenience store clerks, Kings, figure skaters, etc. etc. etc.
These athletes are the same as us, 10 percent will get into lots of trouble, 10 percent are angels, and the rest are below average, average, and above average citizens.

The only role models our children need is their parents. The parents should teach the child how to behave properly, and immediately condemn the actions of idiots like Plaxico.
