Door Adjustment

My passenger door doesn't shut as tight as it could, and it rattles when I drive. It stays shut and all, but it's getting a little annoying. I've heard that you can "unscrew" that bolt that the door latches on to (that twelve-point-screw/**** looking thing that I guess you could call the door catch?), and then you can move it and allow your door to shut tighter. One problem: Even though I don't have a twelve-point torque head thing, I do have a few that fit nice and snug, and when I try to unscrew the thing, it feels like my steel wrench is going to break off in my hands. I've read that car companies used bolts like this for "tamperproof applications," so how do I tamper with it?

Maybe you could some vice grips on the head of that bolt. On that bolt theres supposed to be a plastic sleeve. If that broke and is missing the door will hang low.

I took mine off with channel locks. You can buy the replacement for it at your parts store in the help section. This is a very easy and cheap fix. It makes a big difference.

You might want to take a look at your door rubber before you make any adjustments. If it's missing or not in place correctly, it can make the door loose, because it will hold tension against the door.

What he said.

I use a pipe wrench to loosen those bolts. I had a lot of adjusting to do after I swapped doors on my truck.

My latches were missing those plastic sleeves when I got it - the rattling would drive you mad.
A piece of plastic tube split & slipped onto the post fixed it 100%.
If you move the post to tighten the rattle without having the sleeve on, the door is still unsupported at the rear

Sounds like it's time for new hinge pins and bushings.

Resurrection of an old one thanks to the search button

I'm finally going insane with the rattle on the doors, particularly the passenger side, and the wind noise.

I'm going to order new window rubbers and everything else needed to sort out the drafts there but the doors could do with being realigned closer to the rear of the cab (whoever painted the shuts obviously didn't take very long putting the doors back on). I've had a look and I can see how I can adjust them bar on the hinges, which are obstructed by the wing - don't tell me they need to come off? That doesn't make sense

Also, how flimsy are these doors? I have been driving with no door cards/trims on and could see the flex when pulling the handle to open the pass. door from the inside. While I'm at it, the door pull mechs are pretty sloppily sat in their slots in the doors, anyone else noticed this and taken any measures to sort it? They're another source of rattling.

Thanks again in advance.

You may have aftermarket replacement doors. They are made pretty thin. If the door seems to have black primer on the inside, then that's probably what you are seeing.

Man, you English guys are hard to understand! I work with a guy from Yorkshire, I like
trying to imitate his accent. I guess this is the written form of it, eh?

What is a shut? I'm used to that as a verb or adverb or something like that, not a noun.

Adjust them bar on the hinges? No idea there. Obstructed by the wing??????

What is a door card?

EDIT: It occurred to me about 5 minutes later that a shut is probably slang for a door, I
hadn't recognized it as such because, earlier, you had referred to it as a door....

You can adjust the door up and down on the hinges, but if you want to move it backwards or forwards, then you need to get under the fenders to reach those bolts. You can do it without completely removing them though. I have found that by undoing all the bolts except the ones that attach the fender to the core support, I can pull the fender out enough to fit my arm and a wrench back there to loosen the hinge bolts.

Sorry, was late and should have thought more about what I was trying to get across....that was definitely not the finest in Written English

- I can't see how...... bar = except

Door shut = the part of the bodywork covered by the door that is usually a different colour if someone has done a quick paint job.

HTH

Thanks for the input - yes from what you have said the doors would appear to be aftermarket. How the hell can I stop the rattling?! Looks like I have some fun jobs for the weekend.....damned doors

In America we would call that the "door jamb"

The striker bolt on the "shut" can be adjusted. I also found a rattle in my doors coming from the lower pivot area of the vent window. A small tab of metal connecting the skin of the door to the inner panel had torn. (I assume from the weight of the mirror flexing the door there) Additionally, look to see that the window track and regulator mechanism connections are tight, down inside the door. (sorry for the run on sentences, I'm obviously still having an issue with the software here @ FTE)
