Ya know... I been there.. I played the part of that guy...
I bought my wife one of those Zumbas the vacuum cleaner that schedules to vaccum the floor itself, It was the best one they had. I brought it home and gave it to her, one hour later it was sitting back on the sales floor at Sears, the wife promptly took it back. Of course she didn't like the fact that I bought their most expensive one, and that they were selling for about 400 bucks.
I bought Carolyn a necklace for Valentines day -- $300... but it was "Horrid" and she took it back. SHe bought a $75.00 necklace and I never saw the change.???
We had (still have) a new Kirby (600 bucks) that we bought before I bought this other one, we figured we needed a nice vaccum due to all the traffic through the house with the daycare and such, so spent the money.
My thoughts were I hate to see her have to haul that heavy thing up and down the stairs every day, so if i got her this Rumba, it would save her from having to do that every week. Guess I was wrong.
Margaret used to talk bout her sisters rolls and bread. Seems the sister had a bread machine and used it to make the dough for different things. She was go'n on and on bout it one year around Thanksgiving and I took it as a hint for Christmas. Man was I wrong. It makes great bread. I have made many loafs in it but she has never so much as touched it.
One year for their anniversary, my FIL bought a snow shovel for the MIL which still today he claims was a very nice gift..(you would have to know his sense of humor) She put it in the trash immediately, and he still cleans the sidewalk with a snow shovel that I would have thrown away 20 years ago, it is so worn out, there are holes in it, and the aluminum has worn away. I think he refuses to go get a new one because she threw away a brand new one.
We had been saving for a new mower, and shopping for one for months, I finally settled on the one I wanted, and we went and purchased it. This was a big moment for us at the time, as we were still pretty broke. Well a few weeks later she had a birtday, and I went and bought her some nice jewelry, but being the bean counter that she is, she wanted to know exactly what it cost, as soon as she saw it. I let her know that for what it cost, it should mow the yard twice as fast.
I bought a large brass bowl once because I thought it looked cool and she would like. That was before we were married. We still have it as a reminder of "the doghouse." You guys all know my "buy a project vehicle and trip to the jewelry store stories" so, you single and newly married guys beware, Never and I mean never buy a household utensil or appliance as a gift for the wife. She may say she wants it or needs it, fine get it as a surprise along with something sweet smelling, sparklely, chocolate, or flowery and you might avoid the "doghouse."
Flip, see the above comments. With Christmas coming up and her having a new baby(I know she is your baby also, but they don't always see it that way.) You might want to do some "doghouse" insurance and pony up for something frivolous and expensive for her.
She just got a $400 necklace I won at the church raffle.... but I am not sure what to get her. I have been thinking for a couple months.. but am drawing a blank. I need a good carpenter to finish the table project I started (and screwed up) for her. If I could get her out of the house I have a couple good honey do's and surprise her.
I guess I am not a normal female, i have got a blender, bread machine, tools, mixer, dvds, music cds, and jewerly. I never complained, I was just happy to get some thing, but now with jewerly it better be a diamond or pearls cause if not i will complain.
Rather interesting thread and a good one.
I was told that appliances were not considered
Christmas gifts by the wife but 1st from her father.
Last year along with a laptop , Oh sorry that was the B-day present
for 3 days before xmas.
Got her a few stocking stuffer things also. She was complaining about never being able to find
any tools in the garage when she needed them so I too took as a hint and bought her a real
nice kit with a cordless drill in it to boot.
She's used it once I think.
The year before that along with again some stoking stuffer things gift cards and such
I got a real good deal on skid plates for the KJ so I got them put all on except the gas
tank skid.
Needless to say that my be some of the reason I am now getting a divorce after 17 years.
Ya know.. I hate to see people have to get divorced, all the changes that each person has to suffer through, all the anger, and pain..
However there are people like my bro... Divorce is going to be the best thing that has happened to him in many years.. None of us can wait for him to get rid of that two-three-four-five... faced trainwreck.
