rear leaf problems

hey guys, my frames really rusty, rotting kinda bad in some places, but still drivable, except that the bracket for the rear leaf spring is kinda rotted all the way through and i think a hard enough hit in the rear or some weight and it will snap. question is can i fix this? are these brackets completely welded on or just riveted, maybe spot welded? my truck seems to sit higher on the passenger side over the driver side, a good 2 inches it looks like. what other things could cause this problem?

Spring hangers are still available and in stock at some dealerships. Really.
Also consider a different year. Many have similar dimensions, and will almost be a direct interchange. It will require the same modification to the other side so the truck would be level, but if one side has to be changed, so will the other.

I had two back brackets on my 79 broke and they were shoved up throw the bed and the truck was still being driven then (not by me, previous PO). These are a pain in the butt to change and you have to have tools. Brackets are pretty cheap, but it's the labor. Grind the rivots off and replace. Good Luck getting the bolts out of the leaf springs too, they are usually rusted tighter than anything known to man. Just pound them out with a slug hammer.

Typical NY rust. If your frame is really rusted, you might want to consider a swap as mentioned. The hanger size depends on the width of the spring. It's not too bad a job except for the bolt as mentioned. I did both my 79 and 86, ended up getting a new spring bolt and bushing. Use grade 8 bolts on the new hanger. Where located in NY? and don't forget to join the NY Chapter.

well im on long island, ill see if i can just find another couple brackets. i dont want to be spending a ton of money on this thing, because i dont have that kind of money. this is truck is not my resto project just a winter truck. next year im cutting out whatever i want to keep and junking the rest. its honestly in some pretty bad shape. and i think ill be able to get those bolts off, either a torch or a 3/4 drive air gun will do the trick. i got a welder coming in helping me support the bed better because that seems like the wind can take it away. otherwise thanks for the replys at least i know what im up against.

I hear ya! I think I'd rather pull the motor before I do this again. I got one side off and got pissed so I just cut the bracket on the other side to save time. No way do I want to do that again.

Some of these spring brackets are still available from Ford, some are not.

PLEASE..when asking questions, list all the pertinent info. These brackets are not all the same!

Year, Series, 2WD or 4WD, Regular, Super or Crew Cab.

Rear spring brackets: Front of the rear spring, or rear of the rear spring?

If available, the brackets can be bought from an FTE Ford dealer parts department sponsor at a discounted price.

Hi Bill,

I have a broken right rear spring bracket on a 1978 F250 Crew Cab 4x4. Can you help me figure out what part # I'll be chasing after? Thanks, Scott
