2002 excursion 4 x 4 front axle question
I picked up the excursion this summer. Today is the first day I have really used the 4 x 4. Snow, a bit of slush, nothing really extreme, just snow. It may be tires, may be alignment, may be something else, but when I lock it in 4 wheel drive it seems like it binds up quite a bit. It does not steer real great.... just feels like the front axle is limited slip.....which I don't think is possible. take it out of 4 wheel drive and it seems fine. Some of it may be the tires... they are Michelin LTX's and not real agressive, getting close to the wear bars. I planned on replacing them soon anyway. Even on dry pavement a week or so ago I kinda had the same " bind up issue" when I clicked it in just to be sure the hubs worked. but figured it would smooth out when the tires could slide easier.... but it seems to be pushing more than turning. Or are my hubs not completely engaging and the " bind" is when it bites and does what it is supposed to do? I know it should do better in snow than this even with crappy tires.
