Just to be extra safe, I purchased and use a 20-amp outdoor timer from Home Depot (My timer is not outside, but it is right beside the garage door and there is always some potential for a mis-directed water hose when we're washing a vehicle.

15 amps is fine. The block heater should be pulling a little over 8 amps.

I got mine from either Home Depot or Lowes, I think it was a 15 amp unit.
Say, where do you guys get your block heater besides the stealerships?
I think the stock unit is 700 watts or so. Do you know if they make a 1100 watt +/- heater?

Thanks,

On the average it only takes 2 -3 hours to reach temp with the block heater. By using a timer you will save on your electric bill by not having the heater run all night. Plus the added bonus is that all electric heaters have a "rated by hours lifespan" this will help to extend the life of the timer.
