My truck has a problem with high pressure blowing out the seals and naturally turning it into nothing more than a lawn ornament...on my way into work today I was told that there is a pressure relief valve somewhere on the transmission that could be clogged or damaged...haven't been able to find anything more on it with google, so I figured i'd ask here...is cleaning this valve (if it exists) a better option than rebuilding the tranny? Tranny has 192,000 plus miles on it.
How would any trans pressure weaken the pan gasket? The pan is vented to atmosphere, so the pressure on both sides of the gasket is always the same, atmospheric pressure.
The front seal sees torque converter feed pressure. It's limited to 120 PSI by a regulator valve. If that valve were to stick you'd know it because the torque converter would balloon, which often destroys the thrust bearings in the engine. This seal usually fails to due overtemperature on the torque converter, not overpressure.
The rear seal also seals the sump area. That's part of the pan, so it's also seeing atmospheric pressure on both sides.
The seals that really can get damaged by overpressure are clutch seals. These will leak internally, not on the ground.
Ok...i'm giving up on this tranny...friend of my grandma is trading her a "new" used tranny...only 1500 miles before the truck was parked with engine probs and never gotten to...the '92 slowly got parted out except tranny...so works for me
i have a similar problem with a 91 f150 the front pump seal leaks only when it gets hot.I don't mean the truck overheats just seems like the tranny does.I have a 91 f150 4.9
straight 6 rebuilt runs great and a used replacement tranny with a western 7.5 plow.when I get in heavy snow say 4-5 inches or more the front pump seal starts to leak after plowing a parking lot which takes about an hour.I also have an f250 with a 5.8
never had this problem.I installed electric fans, the biggest tranny cooler i could find and it still pukes out when hot.I drive it home cools down fill it back up no problems til im plowing again! any ideas would help?
does it leak only when using the plow? sounds like it could be 1 of 2 things:
1. snow moving puts too much stress on the tranny (not likely but possible since it was rebuilt)
2. you aren't moving fast enough to force enough air through the tranny cooler and its overheating...the engine doesn't need nearly as much cooling power as the tranny so that would explain why its not overheating and just the tranny
These sound like the classic torque converter clutch slippage. If the converter hasnt been replaced during rebuilds, then I'd bet thats it. Coolers and fans wont help it. Replace the converter with an upgraded model (multiple/LUK clutches). The snow plow and the 192k both sound classic.
benshere mentioned something about a release valve on the tranny that might be clogged causing it to leak when hot is this true if so where is the valve on the tranny? please let me know!
