Would a spray on polyurethane bed liner, such as Line-X, be useful in such a situation? Perhaps a nice contrasting color; such as black on Toreador Red, or Oxford White. It should provide excellent lower body protection, and allow one to stand apart from the limited herd.

Or you could spray the whole truck with bedliner up to the roof line after you've taken the molding off...

It would be near impossible to save the cladding while trying to take it off, imo...maybe if you went real slow with a heatgun or with some fishing line.
Re-attaching it would require some 3M adhesive.
