I swapped out the 5.0 in my `90F150 for a high performance 5.8. I`m running the MSD distributor,HVCII coil and the digital 6 box. The problem is that it`s cutting OFF after it warms up after awhile. I tried changing out the TFI module, ignition switch. The only thing that that has`nt been replaced is the wiring harness.Has anybody ever heard of a problem like this before?
It`s fuel injected w/Mass Air conversion. I found an old post that Pablo put on that stated that he solved the problem of heat soak into the TFI module by removing it from the distributor and putting it away from the heat of the engine. I think that will fix mine too because I found out that the TFI stuff on Fords has had a lot of problems and ford eventuall put it on the fender well. If that dont do it I am going to put a crank trigger on it. We took it to a local mechanic shop and the could`nt fix it, another shop would`nt even look at it becaus it has headers on it. But after sitting outside their shop for 20 min. a mechanic came out and advised me to turn the distributor to move the TFI farther away from the heat coming off the intake once I got it home.He was kind enough to let me get some ice from their machine to cool it down enough to start it back up and get it home. Thanks for your intrest C
If you suspect the TFI module replace it with a Ford module, the parts store versions are notoriously unreliable. You are in a hot climate so you may need to relocate it to the fender anyway.
12-14-08, I moved the TFI module away from the distributor to keep it cool but it still did not fix the problem of the ignition cutting out. So I took the old distributor and replaced the brand new, high dollar MSD distributor with it. I took the truck out for a test run and some loooong smoky burnouts and it did`nt cut out,so far so good. I think that the Hall sensor in the MSD distributor from the factory is defective and I`m going to send it to them to get it checked out.
Got a call from MSD saying the distributor was fixed and it was going to cost me only $70.Talked to a manager and explained that even though the one year warranty was expired I just recently got the engine together,so he honored the warranty for me.Thanks MSD
