Just a thought, but how long has it been since you changed the oil in the top oil reservoir? It can make a huge difference in the performance, and life of your injectors.

You have 3 qts of oil on the top of the engine that seems to never be changed. There is one qt of oil in the reservoir, and 1 qt of oil in each runner (rt head, left head).

It’s a simple job to do.

Just pull the reservoir plug, use a slurp gun, and suck out one qt of oil from the reservoir. Now pour a fresh qt of oil back in. Reinstall the plug, start the engine, and run it for about 7 min. You do this a total of 3 times (each time sucking out 1 qt of oil from the top reservoir, and replacing with a fresh qt of oil).

I can’t stress strongly enough, make sure you put the plug back in before starting the engine. If you don’t, you will have oil all over the place, as the HPOP is going to blow oil all over the place if that plug isn’t in place when you turn the key!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the oil has never been changed, it can come out as sludge—NOT GOOD FOR INJECTORS!!

Respects,

Richard

Wow, I have never heard of this before!! I will have to do this soon because I have no idea if it has ever been done. It is totally separate from your regular engine oil?

Ideally, the engine is supposed to circulate the oil thru the top reservoir, but in fact it just doesn’t happen that way. It seems the top reservoir is constantly moving the same 3 qts of oil. So, unless you change it, it’s not going to be changed at all.

Ford is well aware of this, but I guess they would rather sell you a 4/5 thousand dollar engine repair, than publish this information. As you know, Ford calls for a 15 qt oil change, but if you were to include the top 3 qts, it would actually be 18 qts.

If you’re unfamiliar the top end reservoir, it sits right under the plastic ft cover. If photos are needed, let me know, and I’ll post a couple.

I have not done this before and I bought my truck new. I have 122,000 miles on mine. Here is a thread that started in here, lots of good reading. You will see how thinking goes as you get closer to the end. click here

There has been some debate about how well the oil is circulated, and if there are any pockets of oil that may be in worse condition than other areas, but I wouldn't go so far as to say the same 3 quarts remain in the HPO system. I had an oil analysis done on some oil removed from my HPOP reservoir, and either I have discovered an oil that is good for a quarter million miles, or there is some circulation that does occur.

Really guys, think about that oil in the top reservoir and where it is going.
The HPOP draws from that reservoir, then feeds it to the injectors and from there the injectors dump it out into the valve cover where it is returned to the sump. Not one drop of that oil is returned to the HPOP reservoir unless it first goes through the LPOP.
It is under constant circulation when the engine is running and is in no way "isolated" from the rest of the engine.

Ok, I found this series of videos on youtube. It shows step by step directions on how to do this change, and you can see what the oil coming out of the top end can look like if it has not been changed. If after watching this series, you still decided your time would be wasted by changing your top end oil, well, you're on your own.

In any case, watching this series of videos will save me taking photos & writting it up.

Here you go POWERSTROKEHELP.COM - The Information Source for Ford Power Stroke Diesel Owners

Go to the 7.3 series, and click on the Injector tune up link, and watch all 4 of the videos.

You might just learn something new!

Richard

Kwikordead, you better take a look at this if you've never changed yours, and just rely on "common sense"!

Thanks for the link Richard. We all enjoy learning something new. I would suggest you read the link up in post 19 that Rick provided. This will take you to a thread where this top end oil change was discussed at length. Some people actually pulled some of this oil out of the top end and sent it off to a laboratory to have it analyzed to determine the condition of the oil. There are also diagrams posted in there that show the oil flow through the engine.

I have seen these videos and it is obvious that the truck in the video was never maintained properly. Proper oil change intervals with the correct type of oil would prevent that type of sludge.

Well, I guess we're all the "Captain" of our own ships, but personally, I prefer to error on the safe side when it comes to repair.

F350-6:

Read that when it was posted, but thanks for the "heads up", I know I've missed a more than a few good threads here.
