Question Injector Noise/ Engine Knock?

Newbie questions, why do the injectors make so much noise? When they cut off coasting to a stop should the be any knocking noise at all from the engine or 100% quite? Will the truck idle up even if the EBPV isn't working? Mine only idles up too about 900. Thanks guys

The injectors are still fireing when coasting and at a stop. Have you cleaned the EBPS and tube? I really don't know what would make it idle up, besides the PCM.

Low fuel pressure due to a restriction or a weakening fuel pump can cause louder injector knock. How is the truck running? Do you still have the same power under load and at the top end? Loud injector knock is a symptom of fuel starvation.

The high idle and the operation of the EBPV are different circuits and should work independent of each other. I installed a non-EBPV pedestal but since then it hasn't been cold enough here for the high idle to kick in so can't I give you a definitive answer. Hopefully someone else who has a non-EBPV truck will be able to to tell us if their high idle kicks in. I'm curious myself.

The fuel system is not a common rail like other systems. Ours is a closed system which leaves no other path for air to go except through the injector. This makes the engine so noisy. Couple that with the fact that the lines from the tank to the suction of the fuel pump are done with quick disconnects that suck in air, and you have enough noise to make people think the garbage truck is coming early.

There area several sponsors that make regulated return kits, "in-tank" kits and a high pressure oil cross-connect (to even HP oil pressure between the two sides) to reduce the amount of air going through the engine. I have the in-tank kit from ITP and a stainless steel cross-connect pipe and they have made a difference in noise. The regulated return is not within my current budget and I have other pressing mechanical issues to tend to first (starter, ball joints,...) before moving on to the wish list.

Hope this clears it up a little.

Loose injectors will also make more noise than ones that are properly torqued down.

The high idle function is independent of the EBPV. 900 rpm's means it is idling up some. The temps may not be cold enough to have it idle up any more, or if you have an early 99, 900 may be the high idle for them. I don't know about that one.

My early 99 will high idle close to 1200 at temps below 35°.

I just noticed what apears to be a frame rail mounted fuel filter, do our trucks have two fuel filters?

That would be an aftermarket filter.

If it's a metal thing that looks just like the fuel filters the gas engine uses, and sits in the same place as the gas filters (under the drivers seat on the frame) that would be your fuel pump. If you look closely at the front side, you will see wires attached to it.

Nope. Just the one mounted on the frame.

Good thinking Chris. I didn't even think that some assume, and rightfully so, that the fuel pump is in the tank.

The reason I figured this out is I have changed a fuel filter in a F150. That fuel filter looks almost identical in size, color and location as our fuel pump. Very easy to get the 2 of them confused if you just happen to glance at it.
