Engine block heater question.

Ok so I am needing to know if there is a way to check the block heater, I used my multi meter and got no reading on the meter.

I did a search and did not find anything on how to check it.

So I am open to ideas.

Thanks Doc.

the meter should go to infinity or zero or some resistance. if you get no reading you have a bad block heater . hope this healps.

Well that is what I thought also, but got no reading what so ever, so that made me think that maybe the unit it self had gone bad. But I thought that I would ask first before I replaced it.

Thanks Doc.

You should get around 40 ohms on the plug.. if it is working properly.. Try and check the resistance just before in goes into the engine.. Maybe the plug is bad..

Just plug it in when the truck is cold and you can hear it start to sizzle if you listen good enough.

Doc,

The cord and the heating element are two separate pieces. You should be able to remove cord from the heater and test them each individually. If you have an open it is most likely the cord.

Payson,

That is great news, I had yet to look at it and was hoping that I could look at it tonight after work. that should be an easy check then if it will just unplug from the element it self.

Thanks again, Doc.

If you're lucky maybe it is just loose where it plugs into heater element right above the oil filter.

I believe it just has a clip holding it in place.

Ok so I go out and take a volt meter and find the plug and unplug it, well now I have to check and see if I have continuity. So I take a jumper wire and clip it to the plug and craw under the truck and check to see if I have continuity and to my surprise, nope nothing... So now I am thinking that the plug/wire has broken somewhere along the wire it self. I am thinking that the plug is the fault with all the abuse that it get from being at the front of the truck. So now can you buy just a wire plug??? I am hoping that Ford was smart and made this part available just by it self.

I would like to thank everyone for your help...

Thanks Doc.

Yes, you can buy just the cord by itself. Its much cheaper to pick one up from an International dealer then ford though. IIRC, International charges about $20 and Ford is $40.

Since you tested the cord and its bad, try cutting the plug off and see if you get a reading directly on the wires. These ends go bad from the constant bending and the wires eventually break. I just replaced mine a month ago due to this exact problem.

Doc,

If you need to replace the male plug you may want to consider something like this. LINK

Also be sure to take an ohms reading on the heater element while the cord is unplugged.

Here's a thread about both these things. LINK

Payson,

Thanks for the link, I just ordered one and it is on the way. Funny thing was I bought one from Grainger that did not have a cover tonight. Well it is going back tomorrow as a better one is on it's way.

Thanks for the links and help.

Look at that pic, my GOD no rust! Arizona for ya. A way to test the block heater is, plug it in overnight, reach down and grab the oil cooler through the fenderwell in the morning, if it's warm, it's working. If not, then it's not.
