Hi. I drive a 2001 Excursion 7.3. We went on a trip saturday and the truck ran fine. Just before returning home it started running like it was starving for fuel and misfiring. I checked the oil this morning, and it was 1 gal. low. Topped off the oil and it ran the same. I have replaced the fuel filter thinking it was dirty, and still have the problem. It wont do it when it is in park or neutral, but if you put it in gear it runs as though its missing, and it sometimes dies. I need to fix this today as it is a daily driver and I have to go to work tomorrow. Can anyone help ? Thank You
How long did you let it run after topping off the oil? It will take several mins to get the air cycled out of the high pressure oil system. Did you top off the HPOP reservoir too?
EDIT: Could also be the fuel pump starting to die. Do you have a way to look at fuel pressure?
Hey guys. I let it run about 30 mins after refilling oil. Still have problem. Will go check HPOP in a few minutes. I currently dont have a way to check fuel pressure. I read a post on fuel filters in the mixing chamber. Where would this be, and could that cause my problems? Thanks for the help
The mixing chamber is in the tank. A quick way to check your pump is to drain the bowl and make sure it fills in like 5-10 seconds (can't exactly remember) after turning on the key. I doubt it's the mixing chamber, but if you got some really bad fuel, it's possible.
EDIT: Another way is to open the fuel bowl drain and have someone turn on the key. It should go from a trickle to garden hose-like flow.
Where do I find the CPS. I cant remember if the Dealership changed it or not. It seems like they did a recall on it, but again I cant remember. Any other ideas that could cause this? Thank you for the help
No check engine light, and the fuel level was just under three quarters full. Now, after checking HPOP oil level and all fuses to see if they were loose, along with checking wire harnesses under the hood, it runs fine. Took it out for a test drive and no problems presented themselves, I ran it under wot up some pretty good grades and then took it for some stop and go city streets, and again nothing happened. I dont know what I did to fix it, I just hope it doesnt come back
Your fuel injectors run off of engine oil. Since you were over 25% low, there may not have been enough oil to properly run the injectors. If you got aerated oil in the oil rails, you had to work the air out of the system as Joe said earlier.
Not the question is, how long has it been since you changed your oil, and where did that gallon of oil go? If you have a leak, the common place is up on top of the motor. You might grab a flashlight and peek up there to see if there is any oil pooling on top of the motor.
Oil change is due in 500 miles. I checked the galley on top of the motor and it was dry. I checked underneath the truck and could not see anywhere that oil had been leaking. The coolant looks fine, there is no oil in it. I dont know where the oil went. It has never burned oil like this before, and I do get it changed on regular intervals.
