Need Help Now !!!

Hi. I drive a 2001 Excursion 7.3. We went on a trip saturday and the truck ran fine. Just before returning home it started running like it was starving for fuel and misfiring. I checked the oil this morning, and it was 1 gal. low. Topped off the oil and it ran the same. I have replaced the fuel filter thinking it was dirty, and still have the problem. It wont do it when it is in park or neutral, but if you put it in gear it runs as though its missing, and it sometimes dies. I need to fix this today as it is a daily driver and I have to go to work tomorrow. Can anyone help ? Thank You

1 gallon low? Thats a lot of oil. The 7.3 is electrohydraulic on the injector operation. there is a igh pressure oil pump on the front top center of the engine. Its right below the powerstroke branded plastic panel. Coming out from this are lines going to each injector. If the lines start leaking, you loose hydraulic pressure and the engine runs like crap. The other likely alternative is the High pressure oil pump( HPOP ) resoivor plug. This plug has an o-ring that fails and leaks oil. If either of these are happening the valley pan should be covered in oil. The way tell what is leaking is thoroughly clean and degrese it.... crank her up and see where oil comes from first. The third possibility is that the HPOP resoivor is low. It should be 1 inch from the top. You still need to find that leak though.
