Agreed why bother paying for a muffler, it sounds like you don't wan't to muffle your exaust. If you still have the cats it won't be rediculously loud. Just replace the muffler with some pipe. Or just a cheap glasspack like a cherry bomb all they do is take out the sharp tones.

On both our older vans (an '88 and a '92) we just removed the muffler and replaced with a pipe from the converter back. They sound really good, like a good performance exhaust.

I suggest try it as Pfogle suggests, then see what you like and dont like about that setup. It is cheaper and easier to work with, and if you want to change it around you are not out a few hundred bucks. Who knows that might be just what you are looking for.

Would it be worthwhile to do a full exhaust on the truck? The only longtube headers I can find for my truck are from Pacesetter. Are these good? What else would I need? A hiflow cat?

Depending on what ur state laws are, you might or might no be able to take ur cats off. I made my system so I can put it on for inspection. Here are some ideas for ya. Some of my Bronk and my F350

F350 LT's, No Cats, True Dual, Flowmaster 40 Dual In Dual Out

Bronco: 2nd cat removed, still has 1 in Y pipe, Cherry Bomb 3" in dual 2.5" out, Cherry Bomb Pro or Extream

Exhaust has all the hangers and has been full welded since I took the pics.

You can get the bullet style ones off ebay for around 30-60. Look and see if your truck is setup like mine. Here is my stock cat only 1 on the 1 tons.

This is my emissions exhaust. Goes on for 1 day every 2 years. If yours is like this then you have the true dual Y pipe. If its not like that then you have the cat in the Y pipe like my bronk.

I sell high performance parts for a living and have delt with Pacesetter quite a bit. The headers are of ok quality and generally fit rather well for the money. But there custommer service sucks if you by a Pacesetter get it from a dealer that has it in stock, if they have to get it from Pacesetter there's no telling when you will see it. For 6 cylinder stuff I like the guys at Clifford Performance 6=8, I know they make headers (and lots of other goodies) for that engine but am not sure about your truck. There stuff is of good quality and at a reasonable price. I also highly recomend you look into a gasket company called Remflex they make the best header gaskets I've ever seen and are all I use myself.

If your truck is retaining both cats, then go with Cherry Bomb Extreme single 3 inch in dual 2.5 out and put a set of 3.5 tips out the back.

Hey this thread does what most threads tend to do, and got me thinking about mods for my truck...Not hijacking your thread just building off from it.

Someone posted a link to dynotested cats.... would it be legal to run two of those cats at ($60.00 a piece) one behind each of the headers, straight pipe it right out the back and have a true dual exhaust system.

Benefits are cheaper than a cat back system, benefits of a true dual, no changing cats on and off, for inspection.

So for 120.00 plus the cost of pipe I think we may be on to something here. Only item that comes to mind is locating the O2 sensor if need be.

I have known people that have run straight pipes from the cats back. This was with stock cats and it doesn't sound bad. It isn't insanely loud but does have a rumble to it.

I don't know about what you just asked about the high flow cats and true duals. It might be too loud as in having the cops after you for noise. Depending on where you live you may have to have a visible muffler to pass inspection.

Otherwise I don't see anything wrong with it. I prefer to have a muffler though.

I've designed and built many exaust systems but have yet to actually build what I would think to be the ultimate exaust with cats.

Starts with long tube equal length stepped headers (dual headers for a six). Then the cat built/blended into the collector, so there is no neck down between the collector and the cat all 4 (3 with a six) pipes are blended into the largest diameter of the cat 4-6" then only after the cat does it neck down to the 3" or 2-1/2" pipe. Next an equal length Y-pipe (it will suprise you how much the sound evens out when all the pipes are equal length) The Y is just that Y shaped, 2 going in at 2-1/2" or 3" and then belling out to a 3" or 4" pipe in about a foot. Then about 4 feet of pipe before whatever muffler/tailpipe one might chose.

I've built many systems close to this (everything but the cats I'm usually working with carbs) I love the sound of everything being equal, it's real smooth and powerfull sounding, not to mention actually being smooth and powerfull. The idea with the placement of the cats is to not have to neck the pipe up and down for the cat and to put the cat somewhere where it can help smooth out the flow of the exaust pulses.

Just some thoughts from an experianced and curious mind.

just get a weld on bung for the 02 sensor and weld it into the header it's fairly painless and if you don't have a welder then get a shop to do it shouldn't cost more than $20
