Just bought a 1993 F250 with a 460 in it and an auto. 4x4 long bed extended cab for 1000 bucks... runs and drives....
it sounds like a terrible knocking when there is a load on the engine or when revved in park. Its not a rod knock or anything, its something extra like A/C or Powersteering. (sounds like a sticking hub, but its not). I think i have it narrowed down to the power steering area. Would a new pump fix this issue?
Another issue... i turned on the headlights today.. and 2-3 minutes later i smelled something, and then seen some smoke coming out of the switch area... Just need a new switch?
smoke is never good! pull out some of the wiring, maybe some of the headlight wires insulation corroded away and 2 wires dont like each other are fighting. with the knocking, is there air in your pump? low on fluid? are there any other issues with steering mainly sharp turns?

only problem I have encountered is it does not like to turn sharply... Also my ABS light and parking brake lights are on all the time... I know in my mustang, the brakes won't work unless the powersteering pump is going with fluid... I am thinking it's a weak pump is all...
very well could be, id be more concerned with the smoke though, like always said smoke "tends" to lead to fire =\. but our trucks were not meant for sharp turns anyways. you could change the pump without trying to diagnose it but id hate for it to be something stupid and you waste your money. btw, what kind of mustang do you have? i have a 91' GT, its my baby lol
I have a 96 GT... i went 12.91 in at 5800 foot... its now getting a 351W swap and Stalled C4... this was my daily driver... supsot to be my college car... but that is why i bought this truck...
My dad has a 64 D Code 289 dynasty green one...
But im not too worried about the smoking... i am going to tear it apart, but im more worried about the powersteering noise... i think i may take the belt off and see if that will allow me to rev it up with out that noise... But i really think its the noise maker, because when turning it makes more noise than just going straight...
I don't remember the years, but some of the headlight switch plugs were notorious for losing connection and melting the plug. You should definitely check this out ASAP.
The knocking could also be a bad water pump or loose idler pulley. Do yourself a favor and go to the parts store and buy an automotive stethoscope. they are usually less than ten bucks and it will pay for itself the first time you use it.

I use a hose... Bout 3 foot long, it works just aswell. I have had no time to check yet. I cannot drive it til I get plates on it anyway. Been workin a lot. I can tell you that the noise is on the drivers side. And it makes noise when you rev the engine quickly, but mainly when driving you hear it, and even louder when turning. Going to listen to it with my buddy revving it up.
Thanks guys, and the bumper will be ground down and painted flat black.
Yeah, the headlight switches, and plug tend to get burnt. If the aux. lights are running thru the switch then that is probalby what is wrong there. LMC, and Summit Racing sells a relay kit for the headlights that is great. Then wires the aux. lights to a seperate relay.

The plugs are known to melt, replacement pigtails are commonly available, but it's the switch that heats up and does the melting. (at least IME)
I think the relay kit is a good idea.
That's a darn clean truck for a grand!
Congratulations.
Thanks guys... my mom and dad hate the bumper... but it is perfect for me... I am the redneck of the family... no winch until i get a plow on the front of the truck though.
But i will take a look at the headlight switch and pig tail tomorrow. I don't think the front lights are on a switch, or at least that i seen. So ill need to buy a relay for those or just put it on 12V toggle. Anybody have a link to the said relay that is from LMC or Summit(summit is fun... i spend so much there... i would have too much if i look around for it)
I am going to put some new tires on it. i want some BFG Mud Terrians or BFG All Terrians 305/75/16s but i dont know if they will be rated for the weight of a trailer and a car on it as well. That was the main reason for buying the truck, something to tow my race car with.
At Summit Racing the part number is # GRM-01-130 for $25.99 It is for a 9004 bulb. I am not sure of the LMC part number, I would have to find my catalog.
BFG AT's and MT's come in 10 ply, E rated. That will hold up a car on a trailer. Depending on ur plow setup choce, that bumper might not stay on it. My stock one is mad close to my Meyers setup. Bumper is nice. Id ck to see if something is binding in the steering, which is causing the pump to fail.
