my 69 bronc, with a 351W, got a holley 650 TA and a edelbrock performer manifold last summer, I didnt get to drive it much between then but now that I have been ive got an idle problem that I think the choke is causing.
The bronco starts fine and runs good down the road, just 3-4 pumps if its cold and I havnt driven it lately and she fires right up.
When I do drive it and come to a stoplight or slowdown the idle is pretty high (1200-1500ish no tach) I have to snap the throttle at every stoplight or stop.
Im fairly sure the choke is my culprit but im no carb master.
It does this 90% of the time I drive it, I have driven it and it didnt do it at all tho.
Thanks in advance to anyone who has a idea or place to start!
I have the same problem. 86 bronco,351 winsor, holley 4180 similiar to a 4160. same idle problems. starts fine, runs fine, but idle is between 1000 and 1500 when at a stop. Let me know what you find if you get yours fixed.
I was tinkering around this afternoon and i pulled back on my "loud" pedal and my idle died down a little. I think this is at least part of my problem.... Im going to adjust the linkage tomorrow at my work shop. Its too damn cold out today! Ill let you know what happens, im still fairly sure my carb is out of adjustment also
Maybe found my problem. No voltage to the electric choke, thus the
high speed, med speed cam would not release, even after repeated taps. I found a electric choke relay on the firewall of my 86 bronco. I had 8.2vac from the stator of the alternator going in but not comming out of relay. So either I just skip the relay and tie the two wires together to get the stator voltage to the electric choke input, or look for a replacement relay. I jumpered the two wires together, and the choke worked, cam released all the way and rpms dropped to about 700 in drive. Hope you find something easy. In my case, the white with black tracer wire from the alternator should go to the electric choke via the relay. It ended up that the white-blk went to the relay and out came a gray wire back to the choke input connector. I cannot find anything about the relay, other than its called a electric choke control relay, does nothing else, why they use a relay, I don't know, perhaps inside it has a fuse also?
Raining here all day, worked on it between showers, 70 degrees here in Panama City Fl, Still need the choke on cooler days. It gets down to freezing here in N.W. Florida.
Regards Bob
P.S. I also pulled on the linkage, an mine also would drop about 100-150rpm, the curb idle screw I had almost turned completely out. Also, the dashpot on mine was not causing any problems.
Finally i got around to working on the bronco and my whole problem was that i had my linkage too tight, I had to cut about a 1/4 inch off the threads, but she runs like a dream now, I still need to adjust the choke a little but she fired right off with 3-4 pumps here in South Dakota and it was -10! Now i just need to quit being lazy and install a block heater!
I wonder why they added a relay? Never needed one before on older cars. Maybe the newer voltage regulators were getting feedback and staying energized and draining the battery.
