Don't know the politically correct way to remove them, but I pried them out with a flat blade and a then pulled them with needle nosed pliers. Do a search on Cowl Vent Grille Retaining Rivets , there was a post with a link to a source to buy replacement. They were really cheap......

That's how I did it! Just take it slowly and then nothing will break - hopefully!
They where all broken but 3 on the 89 aero I have. I tool the grille/cowl off and put in some of the plastic anchors (push in) that you use in sheet rock. Then I put the grille/cowl back on and used some Stainless steel screws & Washers that I sprayed painted black.
It holds it on and I can remove it again without breaking and having to buy more of those plastic rivits.

Hey, great idea....I think I'll replace mine that way...maybe I can find some painted or anodized screws. I'm missing a couple of rivets, and every time the engine gets warm and I try to lift the hood it catches on the cowl cover.
The price shown is for a "Box", but it doesn't say how many to a box... Funny ehh? If it's anything like CarQuest where they want to sell you a box of 3 upholstery fasteners for $3.29, when you can get the same box with 15 of the same fasteners for $2.99 at O'Reilly's, then I would pass ordering from this company. Caveat Emptor baby!
I think for the money, I'm going to do the anchor and screw fix. It makes more sense to make the grille removable, for cleaning the cowl and for wiper motor repair if needed. I think the trick is to not tighten the screws too much so the plastic doesn't warp down.
Also I'm thinking of putting some kind of filter in the air intake for the cabin. For example, a filter could be made from residential a/c filters, like one of those anti-allergenic and washable filter materials.
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving day and thanks for all the tips.
If you can pull off the plastic grill, you can tape or glue a piece of window screen to its back side to keep out all but the tiniest pieces of debris, like leaves and branches. That's a good idea about filtering the air intake. You can find HEPA filters at most hardware stores (OSH, HD,...). But that sort of requires you to keep your windows closed, or allergens just flies in.

great idea about screening the grille, (grill or grille??), I will do that too. I have seen stainless steel mesh/screen at HomeDepot and Lowe's.
I also gave up on reinstalling the rivets, the grille should be removable. I will look for very "flat" screws.

From the link above: You can search by the location on your vehicle where the part comes from, by OEM number (when available), by NAGS number, or by the year, make and model. Box quantity is 25.
