The plastic piece is the same for both trucks - the one with the problem has the burn marks.
The test light is a good idea - I doubt I would notice the dash light in the daytime.

Just swap the switch....99.99% sure you're problem will be solved. The other .01% would be the ground....but I doubt that because it is the ground lug for many other things. It's located behind the driver side kick panel. The parking brake assy may need to be removed to get to it...can't remember.
I had an identical problem. I went to the local junk yard and got a used headlamp switch and wiring harness for $20.00 and it has worked great ever since.
There is a circuit breaker built into the headlamp switch. If it kicks open, the lights will go out for about a second and then come back on. If there is a poor connection, it will heat up the switch and make the breaker cycle at a lower current.
Make sure the headlights haven't been replaced with higher wattage bulbs.
