only fires during cranking
Well title says it.Last week truck wouldn't start not plugged in about 40* out.Cold blooded!! Now had to replace the starter,now it only seems to fire while cranking, just as you let off the key it dies. Black smoke out exhaust so its getting fuel.It does have the newest cam sensor less tha a year old(not that it matters).Need help.I do have a modded IDM in it but all fine untill cool weather. Truck has always been cold blooded.My 97 starts without fail unplugged even down to 25*. I dont understand why the 96 is so different when all else is equal. I did turn off the chip,fuel is good,cranks good,glow plugs have NOT been checked in the process. H E L P

your last peice to the puzzle sounds like the problem...... check the glow plug relay and if that is working check the plugs. just because the block heater is plugged in doesnt mean its going to start.

glow plug relay is fine too?? the black smoke probably means that you're not burning the fuel which means it's not firing... check every possible thing with the glow plug system i'd think that's definitely gonna be your problem
