Hey guys, I just wanted see what kind of problems you guys have had with the 6.0l. I haven't heard many good things but I'm shopping around for an F-250 and its hard to find a 7.3L with low mileage. I have a cousin that had the 7.3l on his 02 350 and traded it in for a 6.0l and regretted it. I'm planning on keeping it until it dies so I'd like to have something reliable so I just want to see if most of the problems have been worked out by now, thanks in advance.
My 05 F450 has went through a lot of parts.
3 set of injectors
Head gaskets
EGR/oil coolers
HPOP
IPR
3 drive belts
3 alternators
2 sets of batteries
2 transmissions
1 a/c line
1 belt tensioner
And a bunch of little things I don't remember.
The chassis has been good though, just one caliper. All this before 80,000 miles. My new V10 is almost ready.
the main thing with these engines is maintenance, they need frequent oil changes, syn is prefered since it holds up better, use all oem filters, racor, motorcraft, international brands, the egr system, oil cooler, and turbo, head bolts, hpop stc fitting are the main problem areas, these can be fixed by deleting the egr completely, going to a fixed turbo,
installing a regulated return fuel system, fass fuel pump, coolant filter, oil bypass filter, doing head studs/w updated head gaskets, inductive heat flash for the injectors, reroute the ccv, and installing the updated stc fitting on the hpop. also when having any egr/oil cooler stuff done make shure to completely flush the engine/radiator since these engines are prone to have casting sand still in them from the foundry where they were made which can/will lead to plugging of oil cooler then to plugging of egr cooler which will lead to a cascade failure of both. doing all of this should make your engine have a long happy life, and btw drive the engine hard at least 2x a week these engine love to be worked, just don't drive it for a grocery go getter every week.
The only problem Ive had is one back-up sensor went out and I had it fixed under warranty. Other than that it runs great and has no problems. I tow alot of weight too, with about 38K on the odo.
I have 116,000km on mine and had a bit of warranty work done, make sure you get one with warranty!
-climate controll in dash
-4 new callipers
-abs speed sensors
-4wd vacum solenoid
-2 hubs, all vacum seals and gaskets.
-new transmission
-new turbo,egr valve,egr cooler
-3 ficms
-oil filter housing
-new engine
-hanger bearing
-1 injector
-power steering pump, control arm, pitman arm, alignment
all covered uner warranty, at last glance the service manager said the total warranty work was up over $28,000. not including a bunch of labour! WOW..
-great truck to drive though, just likes to spend time at the dealership. Sure nice when i get it back, after driving my old 97 dodge stown wagon!!
Have a 04 F-450, 06 F-450 and 07 F-350 all with the 6.0.
Great trucks, only one that had anything done warranty repair wise was the 04. Can't remember what is was exactly. Very minor, had the truck back in a day.
The 07 F-350 has the most mileage at 37,000 miles.
Some guys will tell you to look for an 05 and newer, personally I have an 04 and love it. The most important thing you need to do is when you find a truck you might buy, get the VIN# and post it in the Oasis request sticky at the top of this forum. After the Oasis comes back, you can post it on here if there's questions and these guys will steer you in the right direction. After you make your purchase- warranty preferable as stated, if not spend the money IMO it's worth it- come back on here, show some love and become a supporter. The information I have learned on here about my truck far exceeds the $60 for the 3-yr membership.
Here is a friend of mine selling his 03 F250 6.0 DIESEL on Craigslist. 278,000 miles and he is very happy and says the truck should go 100,000 more easy.
Don't beat the turck up when towing, programming, or chipping and you to will be a happy 6.0 owner.
I have an 05 and love it. I have had the STC ftg fail, but still it's been a really good truck. I have talked to people working the 6.0 hard and the trucks seem to like it. I don't work mine hard and I really haven't had any problems because of it. Don't let that scare you. Just get out and blow the pipes out once in a while.

As hard as it is for me to say this, even all that is a little much in order to make the truck reliable.
Syn. Oil and frequent on time changes
Fass fuel pump
Regulated Return
EGR delete
Headstuds with the newer stock gaskets
Those are the biggies. If installed correctly and proper precautions taken, that should be enough to have a truck with a happy life. Fixed turbo, while nice, is not needed especially when you deal with the egr as that causes quite a few of the normal issues that people have with VV turbo if you don't drive it like the truck needs to be driven. The other add-on filters are for extra precaution, unless I just happened to be lucky in my case*knocking on wood*, which case time will tell.
Hey Iburied, I have a 2005 F-350 w/ about 55,000 miles on the clock. I love it, its been very dependable.
I've had some work on the rig;
EGR up pipe and cooler modified
MBRP 4" turbo back
Spartan tuned
ARP head studs w/ newer stock head gaskets (went out at 54,000 miles under warranty)
And some others mods that I can't seem to remember.......
If I were you I would find a 2005 and up. Not just for the updates, but the warranty too. With a warranty I would go for it, they're really nice riding truck and with a string duriability.
I tow a 16'+4' 14,000 lb. flatbed trailer, a 12,000 lb fifth wheel rv, and I drive it easily when loaded, it's not a race. But when I'm not towing.......
I love mine. I have never had any issue with it. I pull a heavy 21,000GVW trailer alot. I pull a 10,000 camper all summer. I live in Alaska and my truck always starts and runns like a champ. Get rid of the EGR and the engine should last forever with good maintenence practices. Its just silliness to recirculate dirty diesel exhaust into a nice clean engine.
I second that!! The EGR increases emissions and ruins the motor. I have several mods and my truck passes the emissions test, the emissions were less with EGR and CAT hollowed out. Go figure EPA.
