77/79 complete 8' bed shipping

Hey, new member here that is in the market for a complete 77/79 8' box for a restoration project. My question is has anyone dealt with shipping a full-size truck bed from the southwest to the northeast or similar? I did a search and looked through some other sections of the forum, but didn't find much info. Basically I think I may have found a nice rust-free bed that I can use in AZ, but I don't have any idea how to ship something like that. Also if anyone has an idea of where to find good rust-free sheet metal on the east coast (NY/PA area) that would be great as well. Thanks

Your best bet is to call around to different truck/car shipping companies and see what they ask, surprisingly up here (northeast Washington) which is a snow belt, I have found several several surface rust /"rust" free beds for sale in the 115 dollar range I just got an 8ft box for my 79 for a $115 had to pull it myself and it has maybe one or two dents? paint is crap and has surface rust that I sanded off. I am sure you could find on on your side of the country but you might be paying a pretty penny for it from what I have heard.

Most guys buy complete trucks form out here, and part them out when they get there. Most transport companies do not ship parts, but can be reasonable for entire vehicles.
Shipping a bed will require a large skid, and since this has to be built, most guys simply are not willing to put that kind of time and money into something like this. Fastening this to the skid could be a pain, and damage is probably not avoidable.

Now if you find a complete truck you could get it transported for about the same money, and you will have a ton of rust free parts. Imagine running an add in your local area for a rust free Arizona cab, doors, fenders, etc. You might just make your investment back. This might actually open up your options, and you might find yourself in a profit situation after the smoke clears.

+1 on the whole pickup idea. The boxes are heavy. My buddy and I loaded my score and we turned a little red in the face moving it.. And we aren't lil fellers either.

Thanks for the replies....I was thinking about buying a whole truck from down south, but I think I'd have a hard time parting it out once it got here lol. Then I'd have two Ford truck projects .
I might just have to do it though if I can't figure out some sort of shipping method for a box. Thanks again.

I heard one of the big shipping copanies actually ship stuff that doesn't have to be skidded or crated. I am not poitive but I would think you could buy some ratchet straps and stand a bed up on a skid. Now it isn't so darn huge. Try calling companies that ship antiques. They are reasonable believe it or not. I would also try moving companies. They use large crates and a bed just might fit.

Your best bet for shipping a bed is to befriend a trucker who will shove the box in his trailer all the way to the front and ship dirt cheap...

yea what he said, ive looked around and it costs 5-600 dollars just to ship a bed, maybe more depending on who does it, and they would probably ask you to skid it or something. i tried getting a 100 scs bed from cali but for the amount it cost to get it shipped wasnt worth it.

Heh, you should have bought the entire truck and spent the $600 for shipping on fuel.

I remember back in 78 I worked at a Ford garage, and a couple of really large dead trees fell on a few new trucks, crushing the beds. Ford replaced the beds which arrived in the proper color, and striping. I don't remember how they got shipped to us, but I do remember they were on like two skids, then wooden framing around the bed (all sides)supported with black metal straping.

Thinking back I believe they came in a tractor trailor, which took some grunt work to get unloaded. I know one, or two were crushed so bad Ford just took them back. Poor ol'dents thinking back now, it was sad. This was the same place my dad bought is 77 F150 custom Explorer for either $5500, or $5700, what a deal huh? Oh well, enough rambling, just food for thought.
